Objectives

By the end of the course, students will have practice in using conversational and academic English, as well as an opportunity to use debating and presentation skills in English to prepare them for their studies, international conferences and other academic situations.

Course Content

This intensive course offers a rigorous week (Monday-Friday) of lectures, group work, student reports, lively discussions, debates, presentations, and help in English pronunciation.

There will be fifteen groups of Intensive English Communication Skills during the 2011-2012 year. The groups meet 10.00-15.00 in room 302, Juslenia.

Fall semester 2011 (weekly groups start on Monday and end on Friday):
Group 1: 19.09.-23.09.
Group 2: 26.09.-30.09.
Group 3: 03.10.-07.10.
Group 4: 10.10.-14.10.
Group 5: 07.11.-11.11.
Group 6: 21.11.-25.11.

Spring semester 2012 (weekly groups start on Monday and end on Friday):
Group 7: 16.1.-20.1.
Group 8: 23.1.-21.1.
Group 9: 30.1.-03.2.
Group 10: 27.2.-02.3.
Group 11: 05.3.-09.3.
Group 12: 12.3.-16.3.
Group 13: 16.4.-20.4.
Group 14: 23.4.-27.4.
Group 15: 7.5.-11.5.

Enrollment

Sign-up lists will go up on the Juslenia noticeboard between Rooms K133 and K134.
For the autumn groups enrolment begins 22.8.2011 at 12:00.
For the spring groups enrolment begins 12.12.2011 at 12:00.

Academic Writing 

KIEN2022 English: Basic Academic Writing 2 op

General description

This is an academic writing course designed for Masters' level students.  It covers the core elements of academic writing, grammar and style.

Objectives and Content

After the course students should be able to write a short to medium sized text in English-language academic style. Students should understand the difference between formal and informal style in an academic context and know how academic and other writing styles differ. They should have an understanding of the structure of academic paragraphs and be aware of devices used to make their text flow. They should be able to punctuate well in English and use references correctly.

  COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Active participation is the main requirement, and regular attendance (exceptions can be made). There is no final test but participants are expected to take an active part in classroom activities.
