I have been professor in zoology in the Turku university since 1980, and retired in 2005. I have been as a visiting professor / scientist in the USA, Australia and Canada.

My PhD thesis (1970) dealt with life-history ecology of passerine birds. Since the beginning of 1970's I have concentrated on ecological interactions between trees and their insect herbivores. My other research interests include ecological effects of heavy metals, the modular structure of treeshuman life-history evolution and the structure of the evolutionary theory.

My hobbies relate to my cabin on the coast of the Baltic Sea: bird watching, ringing of breeding gulls, gill net fishing (it is legal in Finland!) and dog-induced walking.
