The birds were apparently of the same family, with a Canada Goose
accompanying. I assume this may have been one parent. The birds
resembled superficially a Grey-lag Goose x Canada Goose.
Field marks suggesting Grey-lag parenthood, are the size of the bird, the
general head patterns, orange/pink feet, and one bird having a rather pale
bill.
The birds however show a dark vertical stripe on the hind neck, which
suggests a Chinese Goose as one parent. The dark bill, not normal in
Greylag x Canada hybrids may also come from a Swan Goose. Domestic
forms of Swan Geese can have dark or orange bills. The long shape of the
head and bill suggests also Swan Goose influence.
These birds differ significantly from other persumed Swan Goose x Canada Goose
hybrids I have seen. There is no clear evidence for the "knob" at the base
of the bill, a feature so characteristic for domestic Swan Geese.
My assumption is that these birds has as parents a Canada Goose and a domestic Swan Goose x Grey-lag Goose hybrid. In principle a Swan Goose x Canada Goose or
a (Swan Goose x Bar-headed Goose) x Canada Goose could be possible also.
Linnut olivat ilmeisimmin samaa perhettä. Mukana seurasi yksi kanadalainen,
jonka uskon olevan yksi vanhemmista. Linnut muistuttavat päällisinpuolin
meri x kanadanhanhi-risteymää. Merihanheen viittaavat iso koko, yleiset pään
kuviot, oranssit/vaaleanpunaiset jalat, ja yhden linnun vaaleahko nokka.
Linnuilla on kuitenkin kaulan takaosassa pitkä tumma pystyjuova, joka viittaa
joutsenhanheen. Tumma nokka, joka ei ole tavallinen meri x kanadanhanhissa
saattaa tulla myös joutsenhanhelta. Kesyillä joutsenhanhilla voi olla oranssi
tai tumma nokka. Pään ja nokan pitkä muoto viittaa myös joutsenhanheen.
Nämä linnut ovat kovin erinnäköisiä kuin jotkut aiemmin näkemäni oletetut
joutsenhanhi x kanadanhanhi ristymät. Näiltä linnuilta puuttuu täysin
nokan tyven kyhmy, joka on varsin tyypillinen kesylle joutsenhanhelle.
Linnut lienevät syntyneet kun kanadanhanhi on risteytynyt mahdollisesti kesyn
merihanhen ja joutsenhanhen risteymän kanssa. Periaatteessa
joutsenhanhi x kanadanhanhi tai (joutsenhanhi x intianhanhi) x kanadanhanhi
voisivat myös tulla kyseeseen.
