At the tip of this twig a normal bud has just opened. There are also two swollen galled buds, one of which is just coming into leaf. Lower down in the twig there are two further galled buds. The one in front is a fresh one. The rear one is a bud from last year.

Shown is a bisected galled bud measuring about 4mm. Note how the inner parts have turned brown and quite dead looking. The gall mites look like small "worms". This is about what a bisected galled bud looks like when viewed with a strong magnifying glass. The second image shows a detail.

was photographed with a 10x objective and a 8x ocular using side illumination. The color reproduced here slightly too yellow. Note the four legs encircling the mouth. This mite measures 0.12 millimeters (1/200th of an inch)

These two figures were taken with transmission light microscope as above, so most of the internal structure shows in dark. Objective 40x, ocular 8x.
The field of view here is about 0.16mm by 0.11mm. The mites measure 0.130 mm in both figures
