Ruzan Sokhoyan from Armenia is visiting us for August-November 2008, working on nonlinear coupled time-dependent systems. Freddy Lastra from Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, Santiago will visit us for
1 September - 30 November, 2008.
In August-September 2008 there will be short visits by Barry M. Garraway (Sussex), Wolfgang Lange (Sussex) and Francesco Plastina (Cosenza).
In May 2008 Kimmo Luoma started as a summer trainee, and Pinja Haikka and Elsi-Mari Laine started to prepare their M.Sc. theses in our group (supported by the Magnus Ehrnrooth foundation for Summer 2008).
Kalle-Antti Suominen was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Physics in May 2008. He is now also one of the (many) members of the Editorial Board for the new open access journal Journal of Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics, by Hindawi Publishing Corporation.
Kalle-Antti Suominen was elected as the President of the Finnish Physical Society, for a second (and last) term, during the three-day event "Physics Days", March 27-29, 2008 in Turku. One of the plenary speakers in the meeting was Serge Haroche from ENS.
Francesco Francica from Univ. of Calabria (Cosenza, Italy) is visiting our group for 7 months, starting March 1st, 2008, with the support of CIMO.
While visiting our group, Boyan Torosov played in the local waterpolo team,
which won in May 2008 the Finnish Waterpolo Championship. Congratulations! The University Press Office has made a short interview of Boyan (in Finnish only) for the web. See also the news items 1 and 2 in the local newspaper Turun Sanomat (in Finnish).
Boyan Torosov (supported by CIMO) and Genko Vasilev from Univ. of Sofia (Bulgaria) are currently visiting our group until summer 2008.
Kalle-Antti Suominen will lecture a course on Quantum Optics in English, starting Jan. 22, 2008.
Sabrina Maniscalco will also lecture a special course on open quantum systems between Jan. 21st and Feb. 15th.
Nikolay Vitanov from Univ. of Sofia (Bulgaria) will visit us for Jan. 16.-22. 2008, and Boyan Torosov will start his 5-month visit as a CIMO stipendiat at the same time.
Heinz-Peter Breuer from Univ. of Freiburg will visit us for Jan. 12.-19., 2008.
Two new graduate students, Laura Mazzola and Ruggero Vasile, will arrive on Jan. 15th, 2008, to begin their studies in Turku.
Harri Mäkelä defended his thesis on spinor condensates and it was accepted by the Faculty with honours on Dec. 18, 2007. He will become a postdoctoral researcher at Univ. of Sofia in Feb. 2008.
Harri Mäkelä will defend his thesis on Dec. 1st, 2007. The opponent is prof. Luis Santos from Univ. of Hannover. Electronic version of the thesis is available at Doria. Harri's latest work has been published in Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 190408 (2007).
Group leader Kalle-Antti Suominen was elected to be the President of the Finnish Physical Society, starting March 18, 2007. He is also the Head of the Department of Physics in Turku, since 2004.
