Finland´s Reverend Bizarre (9) are a magnificent throwback to the glory days of Trouble, Saint Vitus and early Cathedral. Their aptly titled four track CD `Slice of Doom´ is full of slow burning behemoth riffage and even has one track, `Pyramids of Mars´, that´s based around the Dr Who theme!

(9) This Reverend Bizarre´s mini CD, meant mainly for promotion, could also be called an LP since the intro + three songs have total length of more than half an hour. I received this recording before I had heard it, with an "oh well"-attitude, since the accompanying expression "Black Sabbath humppa" [humppa is a traditional straightforward Finnish dance, favoured mainly by people of 50+ years of age -transl.] reminded me mostly of the trendy stoner rock department. But by the Pyramids of Mars! This was excellent doom metal after all! With doom metal I mean original Black Sabbath and Saint Vitus school doom, not the stuff with grunting for vocals. So, the songs are ten minute mammoths which advance slowly and heavily, still remembering to rock every now and then. Rock comes in with some faster parts where they play groovier stuff. In example the finishing title, Fucking Wizard, has even a guest guitar soloist. Slice of Doom mCD begins with a groovy intro which has a Hammond sound that feels genuine. Right after that the doom begins with In the Rectory of the Bizarre Reverend, the end of which is almost a bit fast for average doom. This is that aforesaid "old school". Then comes the best song, Strange Horizon. Here's potential for a hit. Peter Vicar´s hypnotic guitar patterns behind the slow pace force the listener surrender to the music. Nearly ten minutes go by in a jiffy, with the listener's head nodding slowly up and down until the song is over. Great mood and a catchy song! This is doom metal. This promo CD in listening really makes me expect a lot from their forthcoming releases, so hopefully something will be available in the near future. In the words of Reverend Bizarre: "Doom or be fucking doomed!"

From the land of the thousand lakes arrives this band Reverend Bizarre with a release that every doom head out there should get their hands on. Slice of doom clocks in over 37 minutes and beside the intro Dr Who theme inspired Pyramind of mars Reverend Bizarre delivers here a stunning performance that pay tributes to the original bands Saint Vitus, Trouble, Witchfinder General and Count Raven especially Saint Vitus and Witchfinder General are dominating this 3 track demo cd. Saint Vitus Scott Reagers period are dominating the second track In the rectory of the bizarre reverend, a track that even could be on either the early SST records or Die Healing. Singer/bassist Albert Magus is impersonating Mr Reagers so its close to outrageous and Peter Vicar has picken up his guitar chords from master Dave Chandler. Strange Horizon follows the same path, heavily inspired by Vitus, the last track Fucking Wizard clocks in over 15 minutes it is so incredible heavy that it even makes Cathedrals first album looks pale in comparing, it's a devastating mournful track. With the release of Slice of doom Reverend Bizarre main goals are to bring the old shoal doom metal into a new light and they have succeeded, order this masterpiece!

In the accompanying letter this is claimed to be a promo, but since I can´t find the name of the record company anywhere, no matter how hard I search, I anyhow assume this to be a demo. In the letter they also note that they are the only (?) traditional Doom band in Finland, and surely, to my knowledge, there aren´t too many of that kind in Finland. The first track is an instrumental that reminds me of the theme from Dr. Who. But the next piece, In the Rectory of the Bizarre Reverend, then again pursuits the cause of classical doom, as in a matter of fact does the rest of the demo too. Strange Horizon and Fucking Wizard work well, and are gloomy and heavy in the way that doom should be. In Fucking Wizard you can hear the influence of Black Sabbath. The vocals on this CD-R seem a bit too much on surface, and, to my taste, also too clean. However, I must admit that this suits their music well. The length of this recording closes to 40 minutes, so there is plenty of music. Musically, this demo follows the footprints of the old Obsessed and other gurus. Recommended to friends of slowness. 4/5.

REVEREND BIZARRE : Slice of doom
demo CD-R 1999
This Finnish doom trio presents four songs in more than half an hour on their debut demo-CD which they recorded in 3 days. Saint Vitus and very early Black Sabbath oriented songs we can listen to with a not crude at all, but clear and breezy sound. Especially the early Sabbath influences seems to me very strong, in the case of a song I felt listening to the mighty title track of the first Sabbath album. Albert Magus’ voice - who’s also the bassist - reminds me on the more careful moments of Scott Reagers (very early and ‘Die healing’ era St. Vitus). Slow, simple and very expressive, honest doom metal they play, that kind, you like or not. For the first time it's a promising outcome, but they need to progress to be more individual and powerful. If you want some exclusive stuff from the country of thousand lakes, you know what to do.

On one hand this one is quite 70´s heavy, but then again 90´s death metal as well. Yes, and maybe there is a small amount of progressive rock here as well. Recipe is basically good, but the mixture is not quite right. The tempo somewhat slow (sic! -transl.), and a couple of songs seem to drag along a bit. Some of the parts are also stretched too much to accomplish a bombastic effect, when the same could be done with clear sound solutions. Their best is yet to come. Now in the top third.

Reverend Bizarre play Heavy, or should I say HEAVY. This is the style of e.g.. Saint Vitus, not tricky, but actually more 70´s than most of the 70´s bands. They do their job really well, and although the songs are quite long - four songs in over 30 minutes - their thing holds together very well. Their playing is good enough, although the guitar solos and the vocals still need some work. A little disappointment was Strange Horizon, which, after the instrumental part, didn´t roll on as well as I had expected. A disappointment was also the beginning of the entire demo, an instrumental called Pyramids of Mars. But then thunder struck with In the Rectory of the Bizarre Reverend, and the rest was pure celebration. The finishing title Fucking Wizard - the other one of two songs on the demo that are over ten minutes long - refines the classic title track of Black Sabbath, but does it so well that the familiar feeling is secure. Although I can´t deny that I was very impressed by this band, I still think that, in spite of Reverend Bizarre's false claim that "as far as we know we are the first traditional Doom band in Finland", the best Doom band in Finland is Spiritus Mortis who play in a more modern style. Hail bros. Mayala! For all those who are into real Heavy, I still can very warmly recommend Reverend Bizarre whose demo has been spinning in my CD player remarkably often. There is one bonus track on the demo, but it is unfortunately very hard to listen to, because the song was recorded too loud and is thus all fuzz.

Take good delivers of Black Sabbath of the great time, add hundred grams of Cathedral and leave with a good coldly gathered amount of psilocybes. Powder with a pinch of Stoner-rock´n´roll, quite fatty kind and with tries, and you obtain this funny of saint pontiff. Already the titles (Pyramids of Mars, Strange Horizon, Fucking Wizard), and the the duration (4 pieces for nearly 40 minutes...) are not any doubt as for the origin of their music. It feels the grindcore with full nose, but then slowed down with the possible one! Elephant kind with which one would learn the exit from new single of Celine Known-as-therefore while making him listen to the last symphony habacusienne! You will have understood it, it is heavy, slow and fat with wish. A little like good a sauerkraut sprinkled several halves, the whole under the estival heat wave... With the image of their small pocket psyché at death, to taste without hunger.

Ah the languid strains of slow-as-a-beer n' Vicodin DOOM!! Finland's Reverend Bizarre serve up three ultra-long tracks of slow n' low, much more Saint Vitus or early Cathedral then anything having to do with Black Sabbath. Heck, even the breakdowns display a sort of turgid pace.

The true gem of this band is bassist/vocalist Albert Magus. He's got this Scott Reagers/Pete Steele voice with the charisma of Lee Dorrian type of delivery....quite honestly one of the best singers of this genre I've ever heard...and trust me, I've heard A LOT since I started this gig.

We only get three tracks here, but with the length of the songs and the Hammer Horror flick audio portions, the thing clocks in at pert near 40 minutes. This isn't anything we haven't heard before, but the voice and charisma of Magus, coupled with the overall quality of the doom interpreted here, makes this a good, albiet rare buy. Only on CD-R and only an import. A Doom lover's delight is Reverend Bizarre.

RB's style of doom metal is rather rare in these days: more likely they resemble the bands of the 70's and 80's like Black Sabbath, Count Raven, Saint Vitus and so on. The main link to this era s the singing style - singing, not growling. There are no grunts or bellowing, just old-fashioned heavy metal singing. And the music - well, this four-track cd is almost 40 minutes long. And the first track is a two and a half minute intro (in the spirit of the tv-series Doctor Who), so the rest of the tracks are really long.

Though they are lengthy, they are not boring like you could easily imagine. The tracks have that certain groove, which is necessary for listener's mental health. I mean, there's nothing so mentally dangerous than a monotonous ten-minute doom piece. Anyway, this slice of doom is filled with some very psychedelic ingredients (like the odd mushrooms in the cover), making it a worthy mental journey.

Découverts sur la juteuse compilation coincée entre deux pages du huitième numéro de l’excellentissime PSYCHEDELIC FANZINE, les REVEREND BIZARRE sont un groupe à la fois hors du temps et de l’espace. Sûrement planqué sous deux mètres de neige neuf mois par an car vivant à Turku en Finlande, ce power-trio à la température interne proche du zéro tourne le dos à toute notion d’actualité et de « branchitude » pour mieux vénérer le dieu doom dans sa forme la plus abrasive et la plus retorse. D’ailleurs, comme un avertissement aux moins courageux, cette deuxième démo ne régurgite qu’un seul et même bloc de plus de trente minutes réparti seulement en trois morceaux. Quasi-parfait dans sa reproduction du ton sardonique très particulier de Bobby de PENTAGRAM, leur bassiste/chanteur Albert Magus (allez, une supposition stupide : un pseudo ?) psalmodie des histoires macabres de sorcellerie et de rituels magiques, sur fond de doom forcément monolithique en parfaite adéquation avec une musique pachydermique. D’ailleurs, les arrangements sont quasi-punks dans leur simplicité et leur désir de se délier de toute sophistication. Mission réussie les enfants : Slice Of Doom est aussi rêche que trois km² de papier de verre. On est loin de se fendre la poire... Tout au plus pourrait-on les rapprocher des méconnus Anglais de SEVENCHURCH mais sinon, mais sinon point de camarades de chambrée pour ces doomsters franchement pas très jouasses mais uniques par leur jusqu’au-boutisme. D’ailleurs, un album de six titres de quatre-vingt (!!!) minutes de blasphèmes devrait sortir dans les mois à venir sur un label bien de chez eux SINISTER FIGURE et ayant suffisamment de couilles pour sortir un tel pavé. Le Grand Malin aime le lourd!!!!!

Got Doom? You might think so, that is until you get your grubby hands on a copy of this return to True Doom from Finnish heathens REVEREND BIZARRE. Finally there's a band out there that is going back to the roots and playing straight up Doom, with absolutely no hints of KYUSS or FU MANCHU or any of the hundreds of their clones. Nope, no 'stoner' here, just heavy nods to Doom heavyweights such as PAGAN ALTAR, WITCHFINDER GENERAL, PENTAGRAM, and of course, BLACK SABBATH. Sound heavy? Fuckin' right it is! If, like me, you've been a little put off by the majority of current bands trying to pass as 'doom' (with some exceptions, obviously) believe me when I say you need look no further than this demo, and prepare to be reawakened to the beauty and power that is True Doom. All hail the REVEREND BIZARRE! And, as the Crowley-derived quote reads on the inside cover, "Doom what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law." Doom on.

Cathedral's Forest of Equilibrium has been trumped. Reverend Bizarre's In the Rectory of the Bizarre Reverend is simply the best post-Sabbath doom record ever recorded. I realize the gravity of my words here, and I know most will scoff. But if there is one thing I know, it's DOOM. Even the hallowed greats.... Candlemass, Saint Vitus, Witchfinder General, ....hell even the great Trouble, et al, ....fall short in comparison to this remarkable evil black totem in the long twisting road of modern Doom.

Reverend Bizarre rely solely on Void's drums, Albert's bass and vocals, and Peter's guitar. There are no symphonics, no female choruses, no fancy studio effects. There is only powerful, slow and crushing volume, the remarkably clear and emotive voice of Albert, and some of the best doom ever created. I will say nothing more than "Cirith Ungol", in all it's 21 minute glory, will be the new gold standard from which all other doom will be judged. Fucking amazing.

This is music that God has abandoned for the ears of the truly doomed.

9 Oikeaoppinen, vanhan kulukunnan doom metal elää! Viime vuosikymmeninä huimasti nopeutuneesta elämänrytmistä huolimatta pahaenteisen hidas ja perinpohjainen doom möyhentää yhä kuulijansa kuin pysäyttämätön Juggernaut, kuin höyryjyrä joka vyöryy hitaasti ylitsesi.

Turkulaistriolla on takanaan 40 minuutin "sinkku" Slice of Doom, mutta ensimmäinen täyspitkä on nimensä mukainen: albumi kellottaa kuudella biisillään kunnioitettavat 74 minuuttia. Pitkäksi aika ei kuitenkaan käy: hypnoottisen verkkainen rytmi ja 70/80-luvun parhaita perinteitä kunnioittava äänimaailma nostaa pappilastaan poistuneet bisarrit pastorit korkealle. Väliin ripotellut nopeammat sabbathmaiset "all right now" -vauhtipätkät tuovat lisää sisältöä muutenkin korkeaan laatuun. Lukitarmaiset musiikilliset verkot kutova Cirith Ungol, Sodoma Sunrise sekä lyhyempi avausraita Burn in Hell! luovat aivan omalaatuistaan tunnelmaa, eivätkä muutkaan kauas jää. Tunnelmallinen laulaja Magister Albert saa ladattua lauluunsa rehtiä doom-paatosta. Pisimpien venytystensä lomassa hän kuulostaa hieman My Dying Briden Aaronilta (jonka puhtaat vokaalithan ovat alansa huippua).

Forget the embryonic, though extremely good, “Slices of Doom” demo, Reverend Bizarre have gone stratospheric in the Doom states with their first album. A colossal Doom masterpiece of melancholic Vitus inspired moroseness. The band slavishly grind out of the graveyard riffs throughout classics like “Burn in Hell!”, “The Hour of Death” and “Sodoma Sunrise”. The only rise in tempo is the wondrous groove in “Doomsower”. The wailing vocals just cap off the Doom release of the year. This release fills every bit of the band’s potential on “Slices of Doom”.

"Our Pleasures be joyless doleful experiences/We seek not life's beauty but treasure it's funeral aspects."

So began Cathedral's 1991 Doom benchmark "Forest of Equilibrium". However, the demise of Warning and now (sob!) Solstice is cause for commiseration. In these dark times old-school doom metal needs a rallying point, something to touch us as deeply as once did works of those downcast masters. Once again, Finland has the answer.

This is a pure conjuration of ancient, downered Sabbath, as summoned by Count Raven, Vitus, early Trouble or Pentagram. This debut overflows with gloomy riffs and forlorn graveyard atmospherics, very occasionally kicking into a "Children of the Grave" style gallop: so far, so typical, but Reverend Bizarre have dug deep into their souls to dredge this up. They also lack the theatrical weepiness of such recent heroes as Thunderstorm and the usual Finnish doom suspects, favouring a gutsy, no-frills intensity.

A carefully studied but passionate distillation of the purest, wrought-iron doom, it's the perfect musical accompaniment for anyone wandering over desolate heathland grieving loves lost.

DOOM WHAT THOU WILT SHALL BE THE WHOLE OF THE LAW è il motto di questo trio finlandese, che rende subito noto il suo manifesto e il suo amore per un certo genere di musica. E’ di nuovo ora di doom settantiano, pesante, oscuro, rallentato, suonato da tre finnici vestiti di tutto punto con magliette dei Black Sabbath e croci di ferro pesanti mezzo chilo, è di nuovo ora di riesumare sonorità e fantasmi degli anni settanta. I sei pezzi di “In the Rectory of the Bizarre Reverend” mostrano un doom concentrato su tempi lentissimi, ancora più della media se si guarda al tipo di songwriting dei Reverend Bizarre: immaginate i Candlemass e i Saint Vitus, già di per sé non dei mostri di velocità, rallentati alla metà del tempo. I dieci minuti di canzone vengono fuori da sé, senza troppi problemi. Un singer che si dedica a vocalizzi su tonalità piuttosto basse (l’influenza dello stile di Messiah Marcolin è evidente, ma il tutto è almeno cantato un’ottava sotto), una chitarra essenziale che non cede nessun riff a soluzioni psichedeliche in vena Blue Cheer/Pentagram, un batterista che può prendersi un caffè tra un riff e l’altro, questi sono i Reverend Bizarre. Un gruppo di appassionati che si concedono solo un paio di accelerazioni (plagi dei Black Sabbath, ma non gliene vogliamo) in tutto il disco. Per il resto, “In the Rectory of the Bizarre Reverend” è un buon album di doom metal fatto e suonato come si deve, forse però troppo “standard” e medio per essere davvero interessante; e forse anche un po’ troppo lungo. Settantaquattro minuti di doom nnon sono facili da far passare.

Kovin usein ei tule vastaan musiikkia joka todella vastaa käsitettä heavy metal. Turkulaisen Reverend Bizarren musiikki on sitä puhtaimmillaan. Bändin soitto kulkee hitailla kierroksilla, mutta vääntöä on yhtä paljon kuin höyryveturissa. Biisit ovat sopivan pituisia eli kymmenen minuutin paremmalla puolella joten asiaan ehtii syventyä kunnolla. Metallimusiikkia niille jotka ymmärtävät.

Doom fans like to argue about the 'trueness' of their doom. 'I'm tr00er than thee' seems to be the motto of many doomsters. This argument is usually based on the faultless taste of said doomster, who hereby distinguishes himself from the 'others'. And so it happens that many doom death fans loathe traditional doom, while traditional doom fans advocate the opinion that doom death fans (and those doom fans who listen to 'modern' doom in general) are snotty noses who don't have a clue about how 'true' doom is supposed to sound.

However, once in a while there comes a doom release which has that magic ability to unite both adversaries and make them sit near each other, hot pop corn in the hand, while enjoying the excellent heavy sounds that reach their doomed ears. I'm highly convinced that Reverend Bizarre is one of those few bands that have that charisma.

Slow as a hopelessly aged turtle, heavy as a tombstone weighting on the rotting bones of a corpse, the Reverend preaches the word of Doom, while spitting around his curses directed towards anyone who dares to suggest a link between doom and stoner rock. The groovy Sabbath riffs are the point of departure, but in the Reverend's church they sound much more painful, torturing slow and threatening. The occassional acceleration keeps the attention of the listener to the desired level through the whole recording. That such thing is not easy, proves the monstrous length of the 6 mammoth-tracks: 74 minutes of heavy DOOM, what else do we want?

Magister Alberts' incantations evoke images of a tipsy priest, whose drunk mental state encourages him to spit out in fury his blasphemic thoughts in front of a baffled audience. The guitars sound occasionally groovy, sometimes they create a wall of sound while at other times they offer subtle harmonies, seemingly underlining the Reverend's evil thoughts. The pounding drumming shall certainly be appreciated by old-school doom fans and 'modern' doom fans alike.

Who is going to dig this? In the first place those who are into old-school doom in the vein of St. Vitus, The obsessed and the other early doom gods. However, the evilness, grimness, and dark atmosphere of this material shall most probably attrack doom death fans and even funeral doom fans as well.

Highly recommended to the whole doomy community.

Nyt lähti körttiläisyys! Kotimaisen Bisarrin Pastorin debyytti on nimittäin sen verran tinkimätöntä ja lujalla asenteella soitettua klassista doomia, että se lyö laudalta monet genren ulkomaiset bändit, kotimaisista nyt puhumattakaan. Itse asiassa en ole aikaisemmin törmännyt vastaavan tyyliseen suomalaiseen bändiin, joten viimeistään Reverend Bizarren myötä Suomi lunastaa paikkansa doom-metallin suurvaltana.

Tämä vuosimallia 2002 oleva levy on syvässä kumarassa Black Sabbathin synkintä materiaalia päin ja soundeiltaan se on lähes yhtä raskas kuin Electric Wizard. Musiikin keskitempo on RB:lla vieläkin hitaampi ja sävellykset koruttomampaa "true" tuomiometallia. Groovailua yms. stoner-elementtejä ei levyltä löydy vaan se keskittyy hitaaseen ja raskaaseen leijuntaan, jossa on yhtymäkohtia sellaisiin bändeihin kuin Saint Vitus, Penance ja Cathedral. Vokalisti Albert on osaava ja hänellä on miellyttävä ääni, joka muistuttaa sävyltään hieman My Dying Briden Aaronia. Hyvä puhdas laulu (joka ei yritä jäljitellä Ozzyä) tuntuu olevan harvinaisuus klassista doomia soittavilla bändeillä, joten RB erottuu edukseen jo tässä suhteessa.

Minkä tahansa levyn tärkein osa-alue eli sävellystyö on niin ikään kunnossa ja kuuntelija ei pääse pitkästymään raskaimmissakaan laahausosuuksissa. Mielestäni tämä Spedelle (!) omistettu julkaisu ottaa itsestään selvästi paikan parhaimpien kotimaisten metallilevyjen joukossa, siispä suosittelen lämpimästi RB:ia perinteisen doomin ystäville.

When it comes to doom metal, I've always been a fan of the more extreme doom/death variety (Winter, My Dying Bride, Unholy, etc.) and have never really paid attention to the more traditional style (e.g. Candlemass, Saint Vitus). Well, all of that might just change thanks to Finnish doomsters Reverend Bizarre, whose debut album pays homage to all the old-school doom metal bands, but does it in such a way that even doom/death fans should appreciate. Many have compared this album to the classic first CD from Cathedral ("Forest of Equilibrium") and there is some truth to this, especially the mournful clean epic vocals remind me of that album somewhat, but "In the Rectory..." is definitely more stripped down and straightforward. There's no keyboards or violins here (besides some delicate organs way low in the mix on 2-3 songs), just the minimal assault of drums, bass, guitars and epic clean vocals. The production is excellent, providing ample crushing heaviness, while still retaining a spacious feel that fits perfectly with the epic old-school mood that Reverend Bizarre attempts to create. Speed-wise, this album hovers for the most part at funeral doom speeds (songs such as "The Hour of Death" can rival even Skepticism), with the occasional outbursts of more mid-tempo sections (which are quite well integrated and do not interfere with the overall doominess of the album). The riffing is fairly simple, focusing on feeling and impact, avoiding unneeded wankerisms that plague so many more traditional metal bands. The band's vocalist Magister Albert deserves most credit for elevating this album to such a high level, as it is his convincing performance that adds that special something to this album...he manages to sing in a more traditional heavy metal style without sounding cheesy or outdated, a rare feat indeed. With traces of old masters such as Black Sabbath rampant in their sound (but played much heavier and slower), Reverend Bizarre are poised to become the band that will inject traditional doom metal with the fresh dose of originality and power that the genre needs to still stay relevant. I was never a fan of traditional doom metal, but this CD has made me a total convert...one only needs to listen to the painfully slow 20-minute epic "Cirith Ungol" to understand these guys take their doom 100% seriously and no compromises are allowed. Together with the latest Shape of Despair this is the best doom album of 2002 thus far.

I was first introduced to the REVEREND BIZARRE world around eight months ago, via their homepage. At that time, I understood (without having listened to a single note from this Finish band yet) that I had found something special. The pictures of this three piece in particular were good hints of what REVEREND BIZARRE were all about: pure Doom Metal, the classic way. And today, with the inception of their first full length, this early impression is fortunately confirmed. “In The Rectory Of The Bizarre Reverend” surges as a wonderful slice of fat, thick and slow doomy music, in the vein of what SAINT VITUS and early BLACK SABBATH are known for. Don’t look here for trendy Stoner music, because you couldn’t be more wrong. This album could be compared to a behemoth majestically emerging from a swamp of boiling mud only to reveal its inescapable power to an awestruck crowd. With only six tracks for a more than 70 minutes running time, I suppose you have already guessed that the overall pacing is on the slow side, with only a few “acceleration” from time to time. Yet, don’t get the idea that we are dealing here with a boring record, quite the contrary in fact. And the reason for this is simple: the passion of these Doom maniacs for their music is so palpable throughout this record that this could only trigger the same enthusiasm on the listener’s side. Each riff was obviously crafted with love and total dedication and flows like lava in the ears, you can’t find any filler here. The production sounds perfect and underlines the fantastic power each of the songs offers aplenty. The vocal performance of bassist Magister Albert must receive a special mention here, he sings with his own style, with lots a variations and modulations, always looking for expressing emotions by hitting the right notes. And the fact his voice remind sometimes Scott Reagers’s (of SAINT VITUS fame) should only indicate how much REVEREND BIZARRE are aware of their roots. I can’t point a single standout track on this, because all these hymns to sadness and melancholia are equally convincing and should not be severed from the others. But I invite you to take notice of the last song of this CD, an epic of more than 20 minutes length (!!!) inspired by the darker side of the “Lord Of The Rings” saga, or the song ‘Sodoma Sunrise’ where REVEREND BIZARRE sound a little more accessible at a first hearing. The band recently announced in a French Metal magazine that they plan a more NWOBHM approach for their sophomore release, meanwhile just read the “Deep Bow” section on the booklet of this one and you should realize these three guys are as much Metal fans as (talented) musicians. The question to know if you will buy this album or not is totally irrelevant here, because if you can allow yourself to remain estranged from such a splendid release, you surely should have reached a level of supreme and inhumane indifference for the beauties of this life! I think I can’t add anything else myself, let the magic of the music doing the rest!

Complete slow motion orthodox doom metal in the vein of St. Vitus and early Jack Frost. Vocals very similar to Reagers era Vitus and it shore sounds fine! One of the heaviest and best we've heard in recent memory and refreshing to hear some real old school doom metal with no other additives! Get it.

This is THE highlight concerning doom-metal this year, and I'm not talking bollocks here. Reverend Bizarre, from Finland, definitely have delivered the ultimate slab of traditional but very slow doom. Six songs clocking in at 74 minutes, with the shortest song being 5.37 minutes and the longest 21.10 minutes, this is absolute doom-paradise. Musically this is doom in the vein of Saint Vitus and the likes but in a slower pace. These three guys have produced a wonderful album I can't get out of my stereo. I fucking love it. Unfortunately it is released on a small Finnish label and I doubt it will be easy to obtain in a recordstore. So you have to go to some trouble to get this. But once you got it, you`re sold and you better believe me on this one. I can't stop being so positive about this release, especially with the following motto on the inlay of the booklet: " Doom what thou wilt, shall be the whole of the law". I rest my case.

Bow to the mighty Sabbath! Reverend Bizarre soittaa retrodoomia taidokkaasti perinteitä kunnioittaen, ja vähän perkeleen hitaasti. Old school doom metallin nimeen vannova turkulaistrio on nykyisessä kokoonpanossaan esittänyt synkkää laahaustaan vuodesta 1998 lähtien. Esikoislätty In the Rectory of the Bizarre Reverend on kuitenkin vasta nyt saapunut kauppoihin. Eikä se sinänsä ole ihme, sillä kysyntää tällaiselle musiikille ei juuri taida olla. Biisit venyvät temponsakin puolesta helposti tuonne kymmenen minuutin paikkeille, mikä vaatii kuulijaltaan jo heti alkuun tietynlaista asennoitumista. Ei ihan
radiosoittokamaa siis.

Reverend Bizarre hoitaa tehtävänsä kunnialla. Pentagramin, St. Vituksen ja Cathedralin viitoittamaa, raskasta tietä raahaudutaan tiukan puristisella
asenteella, näin ollen musiikillista liikkumavaraa ei myöskään hirveästi jää. Black Sabbathistahan se kaikki lähtee. Sen on hyväksynyt sekä yhtye että
potentiaalinen kuuntelija, sillä jos tuo heavymusiikin legenda ei kolise, ei tätäkään kyllä jaksa kauaa kuunnella. Viekkautta pastorin sävelkynästä löytyy
kuitenkin sen verran, ettei mikään Sabbath-kappale erityisemmin kummittele taustalla. Kun tässä genressä arvioi sävellyksellisiä ratkaisuja, on myös pakko
huomioida hitaan tempon vaikutus. Biisien hitaus puskee väkisinkin tunnelman etusijalle, eikä kappalerakenteita sen kummemmin jaksa miettiä.

Magister Albert (basso, "saarna"), Peter Vicar (kitara) ja Earl of Void (rummut) ovat nimenomaan tunnelmanrakentelun mestareita. Paras osoitus tästä on levyn päättävä, massiivinen 20-minuuttinen Cirith Ungol, joka pysyy koossa etanamaisesta laahaavuudestaan huolimatta. Plussaa ovat myös piristävät
temponvaihtelut, sekä Albertin erinomainen laulu, jotka pitää mielenkiinnon yllä vaikka muu musiikki alkaisikin puuduttaa. Miehen ääni on kyllä erehdyttävästi My Dying Briden Aaron Stainthorpen kuuloinen; välillä jopa yksi yhteen samanlainen melodinen vaikerrus. Kolmosraita The Hour of Death ei musiikkinsakaan puolesta paljolti eroa tuon brittibändin doomahtavista tuotoksista. Erona on tietenkin se, ettei Reverend Bizarren trio soundillisesti yritäkään kuulosta modernilta metalliaktilta. Tämä perinteisen riisuttu, muttei ylenpalttisen vanhahtava soundi, on kai osa orkesterin "siveysvalaa". Vain yksi kitaristi on, niin kuin esikuvallakin.

En yleensä pidä rajattuihin musiikillisiin perinteisiin nojaavista yhtyeistä. Jotenkin on tuo pyhä omaperäisyys jäänyt ikuiseksi ristikseni kantaa. Reverend
Bizarrella on kuitenkin niin paljon omaa ilmaisuvoimaa, ja saarnaa sitä Sabbath-gospeliaan niin pirun tyylikkäästi että nyt on annettava hieman periksi.
In the Rectory of the Bizarre Reverend on lähes täydellinen levy, joka kestää erinomaisesti kansainvälisenkin vertailun. Kaikille doom-friikeille se on
ehdoton pakko-ostos.

Doom-Scheibe in der selben Güteklasse wie Cathedral's "Carnival Bizarre" oder Trouble's "Psalm 9" waren, können nun erleichtert aufatmen und sich glücklich schätzen, ihren heiligen Gral gefunden zu haben! Denn die Finnen Reverend Bizarre ziehen auf ihrem aktuellen Langeisen "In the recotry..." wirklich alle Register ihres Könnens und kreieren ein Album, welches in seiner Heavyness, Düsternis und Traurigkeit einfach einzigartig ist. Sowohl die Band an sich, als auch ihre Musik sind so oldschool, traditionell und pur, hier gibt's nicht den leisesten Anschein von irgendeiner Verwässerung durch bekiffte Stoner-Sounds oder depressive Gothic-Schwuchtelei! Von Anfang bis Ende herrscht nur unverfälschter Doom von monumentaler Größe und schlichtweg überwältigender Power! Ton für Ton, Note für Note setzen sich die gewaltigen Songs zu monumen

Alles in allem ist hier wahrhaftig jeder Song ein absoluter, seines Gleichen suchender Überhit; ein Track jedoch verdient es dennoch, hervorgehoben und als
so etwas wie das Herzstück der CD gesehen zu werden: die Rede ist dabei von dem abschließenden "Cirith Ungol", welches sich über eine atemberaubende Länge von etwas mehr als 21 Minuten erstreckt und eines der gewaltigsten Hörerlebnisse ist, die einem überhaupt beschert werden können! Der Song ist so langsam, man könnte fast meinen, er würde stehen bleiben! Wie ein reißender Fluss, der sich einen neuen Weg bahnt und langsam an dem ihn einengenden Fels nagt, so bahnt sich auch dieses Mammut-Stück seinen Weg mit urgewaltiger Kraft voran und verschlingt alles, was sich in seinem Weg befindet! Unglaublich, kolossal und nicht in Worte zu kleiden!

Genauso majestätisch wie die Musik der Band ist übrigens auch die Gestaltung der CD! Das Cover ist stimmungsvoll, malerisch und 100% passend, das 10-seitige Booklet wirkt schlicht und edel und die Produktion der Scheibe kommt druckvoll, differenziert und mega-fett daher! Hier ist echt fast alles perfekt, nur ein einziger Wehmutstropfen schmälert das umwerfende Gesamtbild (wenn auch nur ganz ganz gering): Dieses Album schreit förmlich danach, auf Vinyl mit großem Cover und noch authentischerem Klang zu erscheinen! Ob das Label dies noch plant, weiß ich nicht, vielleicht könnte man dafür sonst ja auch die Lizenz an die kultigen Italiener Black Widow Records weitergeben, die in meinen Augen sicherlich prädestiniert für solch ein Album wären! Man, diese Götterscheibe als 12" LP, das wär ja fast zu schön um wahr zu sein! Ach, ich mag gar nicht dran denken... also einfach mal abwarten, ob und wenn ja was die Zukunft diesen Punkt betreffen noch so für Überraschungen für uns bereit hält und

Finnland ist das neue Doom-Mekka! Ebenso wie Minotauri haben sich Reverend Bizarre dem traditionellen, ja urzeitlichen Doom-Metal gewidmet, und dies mit einer Hingabe und Perfektion, die sie mit diesem Album schon zu einer Kultband werden lassen. Sechs Songs in 74 Minuten verlangen dem Hörer eine gehörige Menge Konzentration ab, aber hat man sich erst einmal niedergelassen, fällt das Aufstehen umso schwerer. Sozusagen DIE Essenz des Doom präsentieren uns diese Finnen und finden zwischen all den Referenz-Bands, deren Namen ich mir jetzt mal spare, ihre eigene kleine Nische, die da Reverend Bizarre heißt. Ja, Eigenständigkeit muss man ihnen zugestehen, obwohl hier und da schon mal ein bekanntes Riff aufblitzt. Und wer jetzt denkt, dass Reverend Bizarre Newcomer sind, der hat sich getäuscht. Die Band gibt es schon etwa acht Jahre und hat nach einigen Demos dieses Monstrum von Album geschaffen, dem man seine lange Entstehungszeit durchaus anhört, so ausgefeilt und, ich sage es no
ch mal, perfekt ist alles arrangiert. Auch live sind sie zu bewundern: im Anschluss an das Doom Shall Rise-Festival am 7./8. Februar in Crailsheim werden sie mit den famosen Recken von Revelation, (ja, die Hellhound-Band!), auf Tour gehen.

Het zijn gouden tijden voor de Doom Metal fans. Onlangs bracht Krux het Doom Metal album van het jaar uit en niet lang daarvoor kwamen bands als Cathedral en Mourning Beloveth met uitstekende albums voor de dag. Reverend Bizarre kan gezien worden als dé Doom Metal band van Finland. Want wat een waanzinnig album is 'In the rectory of the Bizarre Reverend' toch geworden! Muziek die aan het beste doet denken wat Pentagram, Trouble, Saint Virus en Cathedral (luister maar eens naar "In the rectory"!) ooit opnamen en zang die zo treurig is dat zelfs My Dying Bride zanger Aaron in tranen uitbarst. Reverend Bizarre is zonder twijfel de Doom sensatie van Finland. Finland staat dan ook niet direct bekend om de vele Doom Metal bands die het meerrijke land herbergt dus daar is niet zoveel voor nodig. Maar toch... Reverend Bizarre kan zo de concurrentie aangaan met bands uit het ooit zo Doom rijke Engeland. Dat wordt in vierenzeventig minuten bewezen op dit fantastische album. Vierenzeven
tig minuten mag voor een niet geoefend luisteraar dan wel lang zijn, de ware Doom Metal fan zal zwaar uit zijn dak gaan bij het horen van zulke prachtige en spannende muziek. En alsof de muziek alleen niet genoeg zou zijn om de luisteraar te overtuigen heeft Reverend Bizarre een zanger in de gelederen die werkelijk de teksten tot leven brengt. Continu met een traan in zijn stem, maar ook continu intrigerend en vooral indrukwekkend. Net zoals dit album als geheel indrukwekkend genoemd mag worden. En dat is een grote prestatie als je bedenkt dat er van de zes nummers maar twee zijn die onder de tien minuten blijven. De overige songs komen allemaal boven de tien minuten uit, met afsluiter "Cirith Ungol" (21.09) als waar hoogtepunt. Doom Metal what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law staat achterop het cd-boekje. Ik kan me daar als nederige burger alleen maar bij aansluiten.

At last! It?s been a lot of time since a really good new pure doom band has appeared. REVEREND BIZARRE is a Finnish trio, true believers of the cult of the Holy Four (a.k.a. BLACK SABBATH or simply the best band in the world ever!) that have studied the teachings of their evangelists CANDLEMASS, SAINT VITUS, THE OBSESSED, TROUBLE and decided to pay tribute and follow their direction. Accordingly, REVEREND BIZZARE play old school traditional doom. In their music purity is the key word. The best description that I can give about their music is the following: Imagine something like CATHEDRAL?s debut ?Forest of Equilibrium? but simpler and with clean vocals. In order to play traditional doom metal you really have to love this genre because you have to accept that you will never become very famous, commercially successful or even earn a living by your music. After all doom metal has never become a trend. For that fact alone REVEREND BIZARRE should earn our respect. But my feelings for their debut go beyond respect, it earns my admiration. ?In the Rectory of the Bizarre Reverend? consists of six slow, monolithic, ultra doom compositions with a total duration of 74 minutes. Their music is stripped down to the basics with a sound as down-tuned as it gets, breathing despair and desolation filled with a funeral feeling. And all these achieved without any use of keyboards whatsoever. All the songs of the album are consistent in terms of style, sound and quality and it is with great difficulty that I can pick out ?Cirith Ungol? and ?Sodoma Sunrise? as its best moments. Maybe REVEREND BIZARRE are not pioneers or innovators and certainly their debut does not have the ingenuity of CANDLEMASS? compositions or the personality of THE OBSESSED (courtesy of Wino) but they created a very good honest record with six very emotion-infusing and interesting songs that doomsters are thirsty for and will absolutely love. This record is not just heavy, it impossible to lift (and it is only their debut)! Doom metal was in desperate need of young blood and has found it in REVEREND BIZARRE. Congratulations!

Naar eigen zeggen bestaat het doel van deze Finse band erin de kennis van echte ?old school? doom metal te verbreden, een genre dat in Finland klaarblijkelijk ondergewaardeerd blijft. Het eerste nummer van hun debuut maakt al vlug duidelijk wat de heren van Reverend Bizarre daarmee bedoelen: tergend slome, pathetische doom metal zonder prog of stoner invloeden, die herinnert aan het werk van Saint Vitus, vroege Cathedral en Witchfinder General. In het Fins noemt men dit ?Black Sabbath humppa? (ter verduidelijking: ?humppa? is een traditionele Finse volksdans, voornamelijk beoefend door 50-plussers,?). ?In the Rectory of the Bizarre Reverend? is dan ook zonder meer een melancholische evocatie van wat doom metal oorspronkelijk placht te wezen, vervat in zes nummers die samen, hoe kan het ook anders, meer dan 74 minuten in beslag nemen. Maar dat alles vrijwaart dit bizarre Finse trio niet van kritiek. Hoewel ?In the Rectory?? meer dan behoorlijk geproduceerd is, zingt zanger Alb
ert niet steeds toonvast en zijn de composities - zelfs voor old school doom - vaak echt wel té langdradig (ik bedoel daarmee repetitief). Gelukkig is er toch nog af en toe een zeer schaarse stemmingswisseling, een tempoverandering of een overgang naar een andere riff. Aan mij is dit ouderwets aandoende schijfje niet besteed, maar wie weg is van rasechte doom metal zonder grunts zal hier vast wel een kluif aan hebben.

Reverend Bizarre on taas yksi uusi yrittäjä suomaleissa doom metalli genressä. Bändin musiikki on doomia siitä perinteisemmästä päästä. Musiikki laahaa siis oikein raskaasti ja hitaasti eteenpäin, vaikkakin se eteneminen on todella hidasta.

Henkilökohtaisesti tämän tyylinen musiikki saa aivoni puutumaan ensimmäisen viiden minuutin jälkeen ja siksipä tällaisen 74 minuuttisen teoksen läpi kahlaaminen alkaa käymään todellakin työstä. Mutta varsinaisesti mitään moitittavaa en levyltä löydä. Soundit ovat kutakuinkin kohdallaan ja sävellyksetkin ovat varmasti alan harrastajalle oikein mieluista kuunneltavaa. Soundeista tulee mieleen oikein old school meininki, koska soittimissa ei ole todellakaan kikkailtu efektien kanssa.

RB:n doom on siis perinteistä doomia ja siitä pitävät varmasti pitävät myös tästä levystä. En suosittele levyä kenellekään joka pitää kilpikonnan kävelytahtia nopeammasta musiikista.

Per farvi capire di che si tratta potrei farvi la recensione più breve del mondo: Sei brani per 74 minuti. Capito? Bravi, si parla di tratta proprio di angosciante Doom, marcio, visionario e ammorbato. Un basso che più lento di così non si può scandisce la nostra breve esistenza terrena, mentre la bellissima voce di Magister Albert dà un tale senso di irrequietezza a chi ascolta che mette a disagio. Nella cover del cd un bel dipinto di Goya che ritrae il Signore degli Inferi, ringraziamenti a Black Sabbath, Conan Doyle, J.R.R Tolkien, Pentagram e compagnia bella e, a completare l'opera, un invito a mandare a farsi fottere la porcheria Stoner a favore del Metallo (nulla di nuovo, vero?). Comunque, per ascoltare l'intero album ci vuole pazienza: gli stilemi del Doom vogliono la lentezza più esasperante al loro servizio, quasi come una preghiera cantilenata che più la si ripete e più diventa inefficace. L'intro di basso di "In The Rectory" fa venire voglia di un'accelerata impro
vvisa (ma per questo ci sono i Maestri Black Sabbath) , che si fa attendere per circa sette minuti, e i 74 minuti mettono alla lunga alla prova e piacciono solo ai più oscuri metallari. Magari per chi è abituato a ben altro casino il consiglio è di prendere questo lavoro a piccole dosi, magari una canzone per volta, perchè anche se lungo e ipnotico, questo è nel suo genere un bel disco, ben fatto e molto evocativo, proprio come deve essere un disco di Doom. Roba per palati fini dunque, ma anche buona occasione per vedere se questo genere è la risposta ai vostri interrogativi e se nel genere vi immedesimate.

Hee-hee, I do know now how the French foreign legion works on its infamous march! They jut put a Reverend Bizarre record on and make the troops move with the beat. The main musical influence for this trio has obviously has been and still is Black Sabbath and expeciall their 'Volume IV', however if most bands who grew up on Toni Iommy's riffs normally wan to speed and sharpen them up, the Reverend Bizarre decided to take the reverse route and become the planet's slowest and swampiest act. I cannot say if that's good or bad - at least the sound quality is well-fitting with the overall stylistic concept, as for the rest of it I leave it to the judgement of those who like this music better. Tätä levyä olen odotellut arvosteltavakseni jo pidemmän aikaa, nyt se on sitten viimeinkin saapunut käsiini. Kyse on siis doom metallin sanaa kiivaasti julistavasta turkulaisesta porukasta, joka ei anna armoa vääräuskoisille. Pienoiset okkulttiset viittaukset tekevät kokonaisuudesta hykerryttävän ja levyn kanteen saatu Francisco de Goyan Noitien Sapatti-maalaus istuu siihen mukavasti.

Homman nimi on siis perinteikäs doom ja esi-isien jalanjäljissä raahaudutaan eteenpäin esimerkillisesti, bändin kiitoslistojen loppuosaa voikin lukea kuin se olisi doom metallin Kuka Kukin On. Levylle on saatu mahtumaan kuusi kappaletta, joista lyhyin on viisi ja puoli minuuttia ja pisin venyy uskomattomaan 21:n minuutin pituuteen, keskipituus pyörii siinä reilun kymmenen minuutin paikkeilla ja kokonaispituus 74:n minuutin hujakoilla. Musiikin tyylisuuntaa voisi kuvailla sekoitukseksi NWOBHM:ia sekä vanhahkojen jenkkiläisten yhtyeiden tyylejä. Rev. Bizarre kuulostaa tosin omalta itseltään, eli vertaukset ovat lähinnä suuntaa antavia.

Levyn soundit ovat hienot, ehkä niidenkin kohdalla voisi puhua jonkinlaisesta perinteikkyydestä, ne kun ovat hieman säröttyä kitaraa ja bassoa, mutta kaikesta saa kuitenkin erittäin hyvin selvää. Magister Albert saarnaa läpi levyn puhtaalla äänellä, eikä siis murise tahi ärise levyllä laisinkaan. Levylle ei olla ahdettu mitään turhaa kikkailua, joten kappaleet muodostavat erittäin toimivan kokonaisuuden jonka suhteen ei paljoa rimpuloida.

Koska kyseessä on kuitenkin _erittäin_ raskas ja hidas doom metal, pitää levyä suositella varauksella kaikille jotka raskaasta musiikista pitävät. Kannattaa kuunnella ennen ostopäätöstä, ettei kovimmille grindailijoille tule itku silmään kun levyn nopein kohta yltää juuri ja juuri ripeähköön kävelyvauhtiin. Omiksi suosikeiksini päätyivät kappaleet Doomsower, Burn In Hell sekä upean eeppinen Cirith Ungol. "Doom What Thou Wilt Shall Be The Whole Of The Law"!

Monet yhdistävät doom-musiikin hitaisen vellovaan tempoon ja flegmaattiseen olemukseen, mutta harvemmin nykyään kuulee näin loistavasti esille tuotua vanhan koulun rykmenttiä kuten Turkulaisen Reverend Bizarren debyyttiä. Kyseessä ei siis ole doom-metalli, vaan pikemminkin doomin alkukantainen piirre, joka on vangittu tälle kiekolle omaperäisen mainiolla tavalla. Tätä kuunnellessa ihminen ymmärtää minkä takia kitarat ylipäänsä on keksitty. Synkeä okkultinen ilmapiiri vangitsee kuuntelijan ja upottaa hänet lopulliseen tuomioon. Laulusta erittäin paljon plussaa, sillä ääntä todellakin käytetään, eikä englannin artikulointi kuulosta suomalaiselta rallikuskilta. Tämä levy menee vuoden 2002 kitaramusiikin tilastoissa todella lähelle kärkitilaa. Kääntäkää ristinne! (Kenny) 9/10

"Ma quête désespérée du groupe jouant le plus lentement tend irrémédiablement à être achevée. Je pensais avoir touché le fond avec Shape of Despair mais bien mal m'en pris car ces trois finlandais ,pour qui la musique de hippie, entraînante et joyeuse ne leur inspire que dégoût et pitié, viennent me contredire. Et au vu de leur musique, on veut bien les croire sur le fait qu'ils détestent tout ce qui va vite. Pire encore, ces messieurs souhaitent revenir à du vrai doom sans fioritures et sans nappes de clavier évidemment. Bref une fois les influences Black Sabbath digérées, Reverend Bizarre n'écoute plus rien, si ce n'est son propre art.

Entouré d'un son résonant au possible et surtout très bon pour un premier album, l'ensemble sonne très ""ancien"", sans aucune connotation péjorative, définitivement à la Black Sabbath.

Voilà qu'ils nous font partager leur vision dégoûtante de la vie, gorgée de tristesse de mélancolie et d'idées pour le moins originales. La musique de Reverend Bizarre est pachydermique! C'est lourd et affreusement lent. Les guitares piochent dans leur registre le plus grave, accompagnées de la basse très mixée en avant. Les quelques notes aigües apparaissant aussi souvent que le dahut n'y changent rien et sont tout aussi tristes. Dans le même temps, les voix accompagnent chaque note de musique, et celà note après note, tout en racontant à chaque fois une histoire sombre et bien peu joyeuse.

Magister Albert excelle dans le rôle du révérend, une voix claire, loin des abysses d'autres chanteurs de doom, qui oscille sans arrêt entre ""aigüs"" et graves, sorte de sermon solennel contre lequel on semble impuissant. L'aspect lithurgique est souvent présent, renforcé par les quelques arrangements typés écclésiastique. Les thèmes semblent plus concrets que les âmes et les noirceurs des enfers, ce n'est pas pour autant que Reverend Bizarre ne nous ballade dans les entrailles du malheur et du désespoir. Quelques trouées de ciel viennent agrémenter des morceaux où les riffs plus que répétitifs sont géniaux, et en plein milieu d'une complainte le rythme s'accélère brusquement pour se transformer en doom/heavy parsemé de solos déjantés et très roots. Du sans fioritures, à l'ancienne, et malgré tout superbe.

Enfin la petite pause Doomsower laisse l'auditeur se sortir d'un tel torrent de torpeur avant de réattaquer pour un véritable chemin de croix de plus de 21 mn, ultime moment doomissime, où les notes bardées de plomb attaquent et pilonent l'auditeur pendant plus de 10 mn avant de daigner évoluer un peu. Des mélodies superbes, et comble de tout, jamais ennuyeuses, allez savoir comment ils trouvent les bons riffs pour tenir l'auditeur en haleine, déjà essouflé de ressentir une telle tristesse. Au fil des morceaux, le rythme se ralentit misérablement au point de s'embourber irrémédiablement et de laisser distancer par des touches plus épiques et plus positives en fin d'album.

C'est bon mes amis vous êtes arrivés au bout de votre peine, la longueur effarante des morceaux doublées de plus de 73 mn de musique vient de vous faire comprendre à quel point vous avez de la chance de voir les choses aussi positivement. En attendant de se replonger dans des tréfonds que l'on aime bien finalement."

Doom what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law?? Hands up folks, who likes Doom Metal? I mean, a totally classic old-school Doom Metal without any female vocals, without keyboards, without any kind of pretending ´we-are-so-fuckin´-true-Doom-Metal´, without any sort of cheesy lyrics about eating grass in a lil´ village somewhere in the mid-west of the ancient Scotland or anything alike. Just pure ´two-three-chord´ Doom Metal as it was supposed originally to sound like in the vein of Pentagram, Black Sabbath, Witchfinder General, Saint Vitus, Trouble, Dream Death, The Obsessed and the likes? Reverend Bizarre from the South of Finland, Turku, is the right answer to your all prayers then. I would be exaggerating to say they could be some sort of savior of the Doom Metal genre ´coz they obviously aren´t, but let´s just say there can possibly be no real Doom Metal fan who could live without checking them out first.

As for some more detailed notes, the band was founded almost 10 years ago in 1994, in a small city called Lohja. Not particularly a good year to start a Doom Metal band as Speed and Thrash Metal was the mainstream thing at that time and bands from that particular genre got more headlines that Madonna did with her new album BEDTIME STORIES at the worldwide album charts.

But since Magister Albert ? these doomster´s vocalist and bassist moved to Turku in 1998, things really started clicking on the right places for them. The band recorded their 1st demo titled SLICE OF DOOM after just three days spent in a studio. After having done a relatively hard promotion campaign for that demo, a lot of interest and truly positive reactions were gained. A small Finnish label called Sinister Figure (a sub-label of Mastervox Records) stepped into the picture and noticed right away the sparkling potential of the band and decided to sign them and eventually released Reverend Bizarre´s debut titled IN RECTORY OF THE BIZARRE REVEREND in 2001. However, soon another Finnish metal label, Low Frequency Records, cecame interested in them as well and finally a license deal between them and Sinister Figure was written. The rest is history.

IN RECTORY OF THE BIZARRE REVEREND, like I earlier stated, is so old-school Doom Metal sounding that it´s kind of hard to believe your own cultivated ears that such a band is still amongst us and reanimating the sound for a gloomy old-school Doom Metal sound and at the same time, bringing back the very best, strongest and most emotional-filled moments from that particular genre for all of us who have once cared about it. The guys simply amaze me with their crawling, dead-slow true Doom Metal manifesto on their breath-taking powerful debut album. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, here pays tribute to the old Doom masters and we should really bow to them and respect the guys for achieving a huge slice of those magical Doom Metal moments for their killer debut. This is the kind of Doom Metal I´d like to hear more of these days, absolutely! Luckily we have Reverend Bizarre and a few other bands that have all the understanding and knowledge for creating an outstanding Doom Metal
sound; as it was originally meant to be.

I´ll be dooming over the world with these heroes from now on ? that´s for sure. Doom over the world along with us now? each and everyone of you!!

Davvero un fulmine a ciel sereno quest'album dei Reverend Bizarre! A vedere copertina e booklet interno pensavo a dei banalissimi cloni dei Sabbath o dei Cathedral (certo che però un po' più di originalità nelle foto no, eh?), ma appena ascoltate alcune note ho capito che mi trovavo di fronte ad una graditissima scoperta! Lo spirito di Saint Vitus, l'attitudine dei primissimi Sabbath, voci che ora pagano pegno ai Cathedral, ora ai Pentagram e ora ad antiche messe medievali...tutto questo fuso insieme per un viaggio senza ritorno nel pozzo delle anime! Avete presente il doom? Eh già, quello lento, cadenzato... con accordi aperti e disturbanti, pezzi lunghissimi... beh, pensatelo ancora più lento, disturbante e prolisso e avrete lo stile dei Reverend Bizarre. Gente capace di trascinare l'ascoltatore nel più profondo degli abissi, capaci di fare pezzi così lunghi da rendere l'ascolto del disco una continua spirale discendente senza fine. Niente di totalmente originale, ma se sie
te amanti del doom più oscuro e decadente non potrete farvi scappare i tredici minuti di "In The Rectory", gli altri tredici della bellissima "Sodoma Sunrise", in cui le radici sabbathiane sono quantomeno esplicite, nonche la conclusiva "Cirith Ungol" (signore e signori, arriviamo a ventuno minuti di pezzo!!!), vero biglietto da visita della band scandinava... se giungerete alla fine di questo disco senza fermarlo mai vi potrete gloriare della fama di "doomer 100% D.O.C." !! "Doom What Thou Wilt Shall Be The Whole Of The Law"... malefico e imponente, un vero must!

Non c'è poi molto da dire...è sconsigliato solo ai deboli di cuore...

Wow! To say these guys are good is an understatement, they me be 3 youngsters from Finland but they are right up there with the legends of doom.
Magister Albert has a strong powerful voice that reminds me of Messiah Marcolin but without his rich tones, it sits very well with music.

I'd been hearing a buzz about the Reverend and decided I'd check them out, my collection is a bit light on the doomier side of things. Anyway eventually I got hold of this debut album and it was like being transported back in time to my youth and my first Sabbath LP. These guys certainly know their roots and, as they say - "Fuck the weak stoner bullshit! Metal Rules!!!"

From Burn in Hell through to Cirith Ungol is simply one slow majestic ride of bone crushing heaviness with the odd little groove interspersed at appropriate moments. They even manage to throw in a little of that "space rock vibe" of classic Hawkwind, circa "In Search of Space", which works well.

Dn't be fooled by the fact there are only 6 tracks, the album clocks in at around 74 minutes, so it's not something for a quick listen. It's hard to pick a stand out track as they are all excellent but I particularly like the groove they get going on Sodoma Sunrise, and the epic closer Cirith Ungol is classic.

For fans of original Sabbath, Candlemass and Saint Vitus this is probably essential listening, If you don't like long, slow songs avoid like the plague. These guys have a bright, or rather "gloomy" (in the good way) future!

Il crepuscolo troneggia sulle immense lande innevate della Finlandia, mentre le tenebre, lentamente e pesantemente, caduche come le stanche foglie degli alberi malati di vecchiaia, espandono il loro dominio sulle terre appartenute una volta alle sole divinità pagane, richiamate dalla lamentela e dalla litania del ?bizzarro reverendo?...Questo breve cappello già può riassumere il concetto musicale di questo trio che prende nome, appunto, di Reverend Bizarre, e che si destreggia su un Doom Metal ad hoc, convincente come quello d'altri tempi: una sonorità cupa (ma comunque ottima è la produzione) e lenta...molto, molto, molto lenta, figlia diretta dei Padri Black Sabbath, Saint Vitus, Pentagram, Witchfinder General, Trouble, The Obsessed, Candlemass e compagnia bella. Non pensiate che io stia scherzando...la durata media di ogni song contenuta nell'album è superiore ai 10 minuti (ce ne sono un paio da otto...quindi fate un po? voi i conti) e la desolazione, il senso di disagio,
di misantropia che le track producono singolarmente è totale, ma non per questo 'In The Rectory Of The Bizarre Reverend' è un lavoro da far cadere nel dimenticatoio, ma anzi, è un platter da apprezzare fino in fondo, da assaporare per la sua malvagità sottile e soffusa, per la sua violenza nell'estremizzazione del slow riffing e per la voce perfetta di Magister Albert, degna del lamento della tortura. Il male si può presentare sotto varie forme, e la musica dei Reverend Bizarre sembra proprio adatta alla celebrazione del Dio degli Inferi...ed allora, Doom What Thou Wilt!

A surprise from Finland. Believe me it?s been quite some time since the last time I heard such a good doom album. What?s more it?s pure and classic doom with no influences from other musical styles. It?s old school doom metal the way it was played in the 80s, but with a more modern production and an amazing and heavy sound. The album features 6 lengthy songs and there?s not even one boring song. What?s more there?s not even a slight note that I think it should have been played differently. Simply put it?s an album that all doom metal fans will dig, the album they?ve been waiting for, for what seems like an eternity. It?s been a long time since I enjoyed an album so much and a long time since I?ve heard an album where I think that everything is perfect. The music, the vocals, the production, everything is something more than just perfect. Get the album without a second thought if you are into doom.

The godfathers of doom were of course Black Sabbath and so you could say that the genre doom metal was first introduced in 1970. Lots of bands tried to reach the same musical level as The Sabs,but unfortunately not many succeeded. A few bands who were successful,like Trouble, The Obsessed and Saint Vitus did not last very long. Another famous doommetal band,Candlemass, is now in the spotlight again, as for doom epics Solitude Aeturnus the comeback, with their album ?Adagio?(1998), sadly failed.

Reverend Bizarre is a doom metal band from Finland and they started their career in 1994. This debutalbum is a pure doom-album, full of slow tempo songs with very heavy guitarriffs and lyrics that will give some listeners nightmares?..Magister Albert(vocals,bass), Peter Vicar (guitar) and Earl Of Void (drums) create a sound that lovers of old Black Sabbath's material will truly appreciate. Songs like ?Burn In Hell? or ?In The Hour Of Death? very much remind me of e.g. songs like ?Black Sabbath?, ?War Pigs? or ?Into The Void?. However the three disciples of Reverend Bizarre lack in quality as compared to their ?idols?.

Most of the songs are too long and tend to become very boring and predictable after a few minutes.Just listen to ?Cirith Ungol?(21 minutes!!)and you will have difficulties not falling into sleep during this song. Furthermore all the tracks do have the same slow tempo,which is typical of doom ofcourse, but a little bit of variety could not hurt anyone.But as this is their first album, maybe they will improve their musical style on the next one. Till then: ?The crusade against trendy stoner shit goes on??Doom over the world!!

Oh my God, what a pity I could not sent my list of the year a bit later. Damn deadlines… Anyway, I got this CD at the last Doom Shall Rise Festival in Germany. I had heard so much about these Fins, who are supposed to be the newest doom sensation… People around me really whined my ears off why I hadn’t bought this CD earlier. And NOW that I’ve heard it, I wondered why I didn’t listen to this earlier. The whole of February and March I mainly listened to this masterpiece! Reverend Bizarre exists since 1994, so they are no rookies in the doom scene. However, this is their first release (not counting the promo CD they made). Comparing them to any holiness of the doom scene is ever so valid, because these guys know how to put down a wall of sound which I haven’t heard in that many bands.

“Burn In Hell” opens with a simple but effective riff. Not many riffs are used, but it’s a damn varied song. Most of that is due to the clean, depressive, angry, imposing and sad voice of Albert. My favourite without a doubt! “In the Rectory” is probably the slowest song. You are truly walking through an abandoned rectory, which has decided to worship more unpleasant things as it should. “The Hour Of Death”, “Sodoma Sunrise” and the magnificent “Doomsower” (sounds very much like Saint Vitus) follow the path of preaching. The last song is the 21-minute epic “Cirith Ungol”. Thunder, storm and a pace set by drums are the torturing slow intro to the song. Guitar and bass follow, and you know it’s Judgement Day, it’s the soundtrack to Armageddon. All adjectives of “heavy” and “slow” are present in this song… As the tune fades out, a keyboard gives you the ultimate goose bumps!!!

It’s hard as a doom band to keep up attention to just one song, Reverend Bizarre succeeds in doing it for a full 70 minutes… and you just want more! Rumour goes that these three gentlemen want to just release CDs. No more touring! So if you haven’t seen them live, it might be too late… All in all, a superb album!

Reverend Bizarre is een band die lak heeft aan de nieuwste trends en modegrillen. Dit trio neemt ons mee naar het verleden, toen er nog pure heavy metal was. Doom metal was één van die onderdelen van de metal scene waar logge nummers van over de zeven à acht minuten frequent voorkwamen en de teksten over heksen, magiërs, satan en de hel gingen. Voor bands als Solitude Eaturnus, Saint Vitus en Black Sabbath waren het hoogdagen. Vermits alle subgenres van de metal tegenwoordig een heropleving beleven, blijven ook de doom freaks niet achter. Reverend Bizarre speelt namelijk een belangrijke rol in deze resurrectie. Deze band is gewoonweg pure typische old school doom metal zonder franjes en ambitie om er nieuwe aspecten toe te voegen. Men probeert eerder de oude stijl te verbeteren. Voor liefhebbers van het genre.

With a total playing time of 74:08 minutes, "In The Rectory Of The Bizarre Reverend" pummels you with some of the greatest traditional doom in the style of Saint Vitus and Candlemass for an immense amount of time. The vocals of Albert, like Runehammer has previously stated, are grandeiouse, majestic yet despairing, epic yet forewarning; much akin to those of the Messiah.

A note on the title for it might be a bit confusing at first: A rectory is a house, an abode, a parish, which is generally ran by a rector (a priest who has full charge of a parish), called a Reverend. A famous rectory is the Borley Rectory in England, a somewhat well known 'haunted' domain. Now back to the album.

From Burn In Hell, all the way to Cirith Ungol (another great band which has had an impact on the work of Reverend Bizarre), "In The Rectory Of The Bizarre Reverend" really is a doom masterpiece. The conviction that these guys play with is truely astounding. Burn In Hell, In The Rectory, The Hour Of Death (A very moving song), Doomsower, and Cirith Ungol, are all doom metal masterpieces. Already this band and album have become classic and reverred in the realm of doom metal.

The only average song on this album, and incidentally the only song in which Albert did not have a hand in writing, is "Sodoma Sunrise". While good, it fails to be on the same level as the other songs, which are all great.

A note on the song "In The Rectory". The version available for download has a much more upbeat tempo change (around the 5:30 mark if I remember correctly), whereas the album version (although it does speed up) continues on with the very very heavy riffage. At first I preferred the version available for download as opposed to the album version due mostly because I was more familiar with it. But after listening to the album version the 3rd or 4th time, I appreciated it much more and would state now that I enjoy both versions equally as much.

This is a must have for people who enjoy the sounds of Saint Vitus and similar bands. HOWEVER, this album is NOT for people with a short attention span. To enjoy this album you will need to put it into the cd player and just let it play in its entirety.

Une appellation « true doom » et un 5/5 dans Hard’N Heavy (le seul que j’aie jamais observé depuis la nouvelle formule de la rentrée 2002), il n’en fallait pas plus pour attiser ma curiosité et titiller mon instinct de consommateur acheteur. Je suis donc parti à la quête de ce métal maudit véritable, appellation d’origine contrôlée (en effet le groupe vient de Finlande, spécialiste en la matière).

Première constatation, on a droit à 74 minutes de musique pour 6 chansons, c’est bon ça commence bien. Le CD s’ouvre sur quelques plaintes et le premier riff de Burn in Hell entre en scène. Il entre en scène, c’est exactement le terme qui convient car cette musique est une magnifique représentation du passage de la vie à la mort (bon … ok, je m’enflamme pitêtre un peu, mais ça me fait plaisir). C’est lourd, très lourd, et lent, très lent. Pourtant, il se dégage une mélodie de ce premier riff qui est tout à fait délectable. En même temps on sent une atmosphère pesante s’installer dans la pièce, on n’est pas là pour s’amuser, non, on va passer une heure et quart de recueil et de méditation sur ce qu’on veut. La guitare est donc très lourde, grasse et elle a pour compagne d’infortune une basse qui délivre une sublime introduction sur Doomsower et surtout qui fait preuve d’une excellente tenue tout au long de la galette. On rajoute bien évidemment une batterie là-dessus pour alourdir le tempo et un chant, clair je tiens à préciser puisque c’est du true doom (c’est eux-mêmes qui le disent que le true doom a un chant clair puisqu’il puise ses racines dans Black Sabbath), très beau qui donne une bonne idée de ce que peut être le déchirement.

Il n’y a pas erreur sur la marchandise, ce n’est pas de la musique de joie, tout n’est que tristesse, mélancolie et on entrevoit juste une petite fenêtre vers un peu plus d’allégresse et de pêche, c’est lors de la deuxième partie de In the Rectory (la chanson) qui est carrément du bon vieux heavy metal à la NWOBHM, dont ils avouent être des fans d’ailleurs. Juste une petite lueur et c’est bon, après on replonge dans la lenteur extrême. Au minimum un accord toutes les 10 secondes, pas moins … Bon, j’exagère un peu mais pas tellement quand même. N’empêche ce pachydermisme arrive à donner quelque chose : une ambiance formidable comme je l’ai dit au début. Vraiment, le doom c’est un excellent style de musique pour se poser, réfléchir et déprimer (si affinité). En plus ce disque n’est pas qu'ambiance, il distille de la musique qui l’air de rien est très agréable à écouter, car n’oublions pas que nous parlons de musique et donc de plaisir à l’écoute. Cible atteinte.

Enfin, le disque s’achève dans l’absolutisme et le jusqu’au-boutisme puisque la dernière piste, Cirith Ungol, de l’album vous entraînera pour pas moins de 20 minutes de pur doom et vous fera comprendre ce que l’expression « c’est la fin » veut réellement dire. Des riffs distribués avec une extrême parcimonie (vu le rythme, c’est un peu normal) mais qui touchent juste et accompagnés d’une petite nappe de claviers pour l’ultime fin comme pour signifier qu’on touche vraiment le fond cette fois. Du tout bon et pour ceux qui veulent découvrir ce qu’est le doom, il est chaudement recommandé d’autant plus que nombre d’amateurs de doom considèrent cet album comme un sommet du genre.

Wer in den letzten Monaten die Doom-Szene verfolgt hat, wird auch den Aufruhr mitbekommen haben, den das Debüt der drei Finnen dort verursacht hat. Eigentlich überall wurde "In The Rectory..." abgefeiert und als absoluter Meilenstein des Doom-Metal bezeichnet. Klar, dass ich da auch mal reinhören musste. Und ich muss zugeben, dass die Vorschusslorbeeren nicht übertrieben waren. Reverend Bizarre kann man allerhöchstens noch vorwerfen, nichts wirklich neues zu machen, sondern sich im Fahrwasser solcher Bands wie SAINT VITUS, (alte) CATHEDRAL, PENTAGRAM und REVELATION zu bewegen. Aber wer den Jungs diesen Vorwurf macht hat wohl nicht ganz begriffen, was Doom Metal auszeichnet, nämlich Ehrlichkeit und die haben die drei Finnen. Sechs mal gibts ordentlich was auf die Nuss, vor allem bei 'In The Rectory' und dem heftigen 'Doomsower'. Den Abschuss schaffen die bizarren Referenten aber mit dem über 20-minütigen Wahnsinnssong Cirith Ungol. Selten zuvor ist es jemandem gelungen, absolute Hoffnungslosigkeit so ergreifend in Musik zu fassen. Die Songs werden von tonnenschweren Riffs getragen, der Bass ist gut zu vernehmen und das Schlagzeug hat diese Art, sich einem ins Hirn zu hämmern, die man zuletzt bei Warning erleben konnte. Darüber thronen Peters Vocals, die in ihrer Theatralik am ehesten an den guten alten Scott Reagers erinnern. Wenn es etwas gibt, was mir an diesem Album nicht unbedingt gefällt, ist es die lange Spielzeit. Ein Song weniger und es wäre keine abendfüllende Beschäftigung die Scheibe zu hören, andererseits: Auf welchen Song will man denn freiwillig verzichten?

Der Sound von "In The Rectory..." knallt ordentlich, und klingt auch angemessen dreckig, wie eine Band, die sich an SAINT VITUS und CATHEDRAL orientiert nun mal klingen sollte. Das eine oder andere Grinsen konnte mir die ganze Aufmachung der Platte entlocken. Wer sich beim Backcover nicht an "Forst Of Equilibrium" von eben Cathedral erinnert fühlt, hat offensichtlich zu wenig Doom Metal gehört, hehe. Auch sonst ist noch die eine oder andere Anspielung im stilvoll gestalteten Booklet zu entdecken. Mit dem Auftreiben der Scheibe wirds dann aber leider abenteuerlich: versucht es am besten mal bei Psychedelic (info@psycheDOOMelic.com) oder bei der Band direkt: reverendbizarre@hotmail.com. Gerüchteweise liegt übrigens auch der Release eines Doppel-Vinyls des Albums in der Luft...

Il est toujours agréable de voir le nom de Witchfinder General sur une bio d'un groupe actuel. Ces anglais un rien décadents, du moins si on en juge par les pochettes de leurs deux albums, n'ont récolté un statut de groupe 'culte' qu'après avoir splitté?ce qui est finalement fort dommage car on aurait peut être eu droit à un successeur aux géniaux " Friends Of Hell " et " Death Penalty ". Vous l'aurez compris, Reverend Bizarre a un fort penchant pour le Doom Metal des années quatre-vingt. " In The Rectory Of The Bizarre Reverend " est beaucoup plus proche, dans l'esprit et dans la réalisation, des premiers albums de Candlemass (sans le souffle de Messiah Marcolin), de Trouble ou même de Saint Vitus que des productions actuelles de Cathedral ou Anathema. C'est lourd (très lourd), lent (très lent) et sans aucune concession à une approche plus moderne (plus Gothique) du genre. Les changements sont aussi rares qu'efficaces et les vocaux clairs accentuent le charme suranné de l'al
bum. Les amateurs du genre vont s'en délecter, les autres chercheront, en vain, un quelconque intérêt à une musique qui peut paraître soporifique. Un album à idolâtrer ou à oublier au plus vite?

The Lowdown : Reverend Bizarre's first album raised the bar for snail's pace brutality. The follow up is even better. Crippling heaviness and powerfully emotive atmospheres combine majestically, all beautifully paced and delivered with bucketloads of otherworldly style. Even though 20 minute songs should in theory, be dreary affairs, centrepiece 'From The Void' is spellbinding. I shit you not. This is the finest Doom album since Cathedral's peerless 'Endtyme'. Yup, that good.

It may be a little cavalier of me to say this, but it's my belief that Reverend Bizarre played a great part in ushering this new Doom Renaissance with their 2002 masterpiece In the Rectory of the Bizarre Reverend. A perfect synergy of occult-driven power, emotion and volume that has already created a classic and inspired a multitude of bands to plug in and slow down.

Obviously I wasn't the only one to think that the band was on to something special, as they quickly were swept up from relative obscurity by Finland's Spinefarm label, landed a spot in the high profile spots in the Tuska festival at Helsinki (among others) and recorded an EP (albeit a 70 MINUTE EP!).

Lightning strikes twice, the doom-laden wunderkinds have created another epic - although this time the lyrics and music take a decidedly darker turn, sucking the any and all light right out of the room. The band eschew any trace of psychedelia and the popular "groove-laden" breakdown that might lighten the mood, for the addition of "atmosphere": various audio snippets, and occasional Hammond-ish keyboards and vocalist Albert's distant wailing and gnashing of teeth to augment bass/percussion trance-inducing jams. What a record.

"The Wandering Jew" is the instant standout - an epic length tale of Christ's tortuous journey to Golgotha and what happens if you happen to be amongst those in the crowd that spit in the Saviour's face as he carries his burden. The take is much different than anything you've heard - Christ as Son of God or martyr for the lower class? Christ as an occult figure, casting spells?? Whoa.

Albert's vocals are still the tested trademark of the band - they could go country and you'd still recognize that clear yet ominous timbre, perhaps the best built voice for doom metal since Ozzy picked up a microphone.

Another doom metal classic, you'll soon realize.

Reverend Bizarrelle ei ole sijaa maailmassa, jossa kukaan ei jaksa keskittyä mihinkään. Infoa tulee sellaisena ärsytystulvana ettei mikään tunnu enää miltään. Musiikissakin ainoa merkitsevä tekijä on bittiläjänä imuroitava biisi, albumeita kuuntelevat enää vanhat hämyt. Mihin laitetaan sellainen bändi, jonka levyllä on peräkkäin 20- ja 18-minuuttiset biisit, jotka välttelevät vauhtia kuin kohti kuolemanselliä raahautuva murhaaja?

Helvettiin. Kaikki nämä bändit joutavat helvettiin. Sinne samaan pätsiin, missä vanhat jäärät kuuntelevat doomia ja ihmettelevät ohikiitäviä freddursteja lippiksissään. Pistävät tupakaksi, ja kuuntelevat saman 20 minuutin siivun uudelleen. From The Void on raastavaa tyhjyyttä, hullaannuttavaa toistoa, jonka tahtiin tekee ensin mieli repiä tukkaa päästä, mutta joka lopulta, jos siihen jaksaa keskittyä, kääntää silmämunat ympäri tuo hyvänolontunteen.

Reverend Bizarre ei anna armoa. Se on vieläkin ehdottomampi kuin In The Rectory Of The Bizarre Reverendillä, ehkä vieläkin vaikeammin lähestyttävä, mutta taatusti palkitseva. Albert Witchfinderin vokaalit julistavat ja toteavat, mutta eivät jätä kommentoinnin varaa. Mitätön kitarasoolo saattaa rävähtää kahdeksan minuutin kohdalla, ja millä tahansa muulla levyllä se menisi huomaamatta ohi, mutta Harbinger Of Metalilla se on kuin kangastus, joka osoittautuu todeksi. Tämä on niin irstas levy, ettei mitään rajaa.

Let's Make Some Noise (Fin)

Tuomionpäivän suurlähettiläät jyräyttävät Spikefarmin kautta pirullisen sopivasti joulumarkkinoille uuden Harbinger of Metal -EP:nsä. Tosin mittaa tällä “lyhytsoitolla” on peräti 74 minuuttia. Jos tarkastelee asiaa doom-bändin näkökulmasta, on levyn nimeäminen EP:ksi jokseenkin loogista, sillä seitsemästä raidasta kolme on lyhyitä välisoittoja ja yksi coveri. Tavallaan levy siis sisältää perinteistä EP- ja b-puoli-kamaa, vaikka sävellyksellisen rungon muodostavien kolmen monumentaalisen kappaleen yhteismitta on enemmän kuin tarpeeksi mille tahansa LP:lle.

Siinä missä jotkut bändit laittavat pienimmille julkaisuilleen ylijäämätavaraa ja kuriositeetteja, tarjoaa Reverend Bizarre vain ja ainoastaan parastaan. Harbinger of Metal on täyttä tavaraa alusta loppuun. Esitysten painostava intensiteetti säilyy läpi kestonsa, vaikka yhtyeen hidasta ja tunnelmallista vanhan liiton doom metallia kuullaan kahteenkin otteeseen parinkymmenen minuutin annoksina. Ainoastaan turhan pitkä rumpusoolo (onko niitä muunlaisia?) From the Voidissa edustaa ilmavuutta, jota ilmankin olisi voinut olla. Pitemmän päälle sekään ei haittaa, sillä kun kerran pääsee sisälle tämän Pastorin synkkään, vangitsevaan saarnaan, on se kuunneltava loppuun. Muuta vaihtoehtoa ei ole.

Basistivokalisti Albert Witchfinderin komentava, voimakkaana kajahtava laulu on alan eliittiä. Mies julistaa lontooksi virheettömästi, ja kun rähinä- ja murinaosastokin luonnistuu erinomaisesti, väittäisin miehen olevan maamme parhaita hevilaulajia, jos ei paras. Mahtavat soundit tekevät oikeutta Albertin, Earl of Voidin (rummut) ja Peter Vicarin (kitara) riisutulle, mutta uskomattoman monisävytteiselle ilmaisulle. Erityisen korviahivelevästi välittyvät basson kaikki värit ja vivahteet.

Kappaleet vyöryvät hitaasti ja varmasti eteenpäin. Kakkosraita Strange Horizon on jonkinlainen kardinaalibiisi, ehkä täydellinen esimerkki old school doomista. Pirullinen From the Void ja polveileva The Wandering Jew ovat kuin eeppisiä matkoja, jotka pitkine fiilistelyineen ovat lähes progressiivisia luonteeltaan. Viimeinen Burzum-cover Dunkelheit on juuri sellainen kuin hyvän lainabiisin tuleekin olla: läpikotaisin tulkitsijabändin leimaa kantava esitys. Reverend Bizarren näkemys poikkeaa paitsi soundeiltaan myös puhtailta lauluosuuksiltaan ja (luonnollisesti) hitaalta tempoltaan alkuperäisestä turskaklassikosta.

Harbinger of Metal on vuoden doom-levy. Se peittoaa jopa Pastorin esikoisen, In the Rectory of the Bizarre Reverendin, ja hiuksenhienosti myös Skepticismin Farmakonin. Kyllä meidän suomalaisten passaa, kun maamme rajojen sisällä asustaa sekä perinteisen doomin huippunimi, että modernin, kokeilevamman death-doomin kärkeä edustava akti.

The distance from Slice Of Doom their demo masterpiece from 1999 to this Ep release 2003 is long, in between they have made an album In The Rectory Of Bizzare Reverend, made a few features to comps, made a german tour with Revelation and Mirror Of Deception, played at the Doom Shall Rise fest, made several shows back home in Finland, signed a deal with Spikefarm, a underlabel to Spinefarm. Personally I havent heard anything since Slice Of Doom until this Ep came along. Still I consider Slice Of Doom as one of the greatest Demos I have ever heard in recent years, it nearly made me threw my other demos out of the window. I have had the most listening pleasure with Harbinger Of Metal in the past few weeks, its been on almost instant repeat. I have nothing else to compare beside Slice Of Doom but this is a lot darker and it has a much more progressive concept. The Reverends are covering new ground here, its still outrageously devestating and mournful old school Doom Metal. The track that differs from the rest are From The Void with growl vocals and a far too long drumbreak in the midsection, that is the only minor problem I have with Harbringer Of Metal. It's a good tune slow and haunting but it doesnt cheer me up completely. Extraplus for Strange Horizon and the brilliant The Wandering Jew, that is the ultimate mourner here. Reverend Bizarre have made a excellent Ep with a intensity and passion. Every dedicated Doomster should have a copy of this one and it's a perfect release for those who are looking for something new and alternative.

Aiemman syksyllä julkaistu split 7" esitteli varsin erilaista ja uudistunutta Reverend Bizarrea perinteisemmän heavy metallin muodossa. Onneksi kokeilu tuntuu jääneen vain yhden biisin mittaiseksi, sillä uusi tuhti 74-minuuttinen MCD on debyytiltä tuttua joskin astetta synkempää materiaalia.

Bändi laahaa edelleen tyylikkäästi vanhan liiton doomin kiemuroissa, mutta on saanut sointiinsa rutkasti lisää jykevyyttä. Osa tästä johtuu varmasti aiempaa selkeämmästä tuotannosta, mutta myös biisirakenteet vaikuttavat aiempaa harkitummilta ja pelkistetymmiltä. Vokalisoinneissa on havaittavissa myös selkeää parannusta, sillä ne ovat aiempaan verrattuna täyteläisemmät ja sielukkaammat. Näistä seikoista johtuen orkesterin omalaatuisuus on entisestäänkin jalostunut ja korostunut.

Harbringer of Metallin ainut kauneusvirhe on levyn puolivälistä löytyvä massiiviseen 20 minuutin mittaan paisutettu From the Void -kappale. Biisi itsessään on liiankin laahaava ja yksinkertainen ja sen pitkä kesto tuntuu liiankin tarkoitushakuiselta. Kun mukaan on vielä ympätty tunnelman latistava rumpusoolo, voi kappaleen laittamista levylle suuresti kyseenalaistaa. Ilman em. kappaletta kokonaisuus olisi erittäin hyvin tasapainossa ja pitkien piisien eräänlaisina introina toimivat lyhyehköt instrumentaalit johdattavat kuuntelijan oivasti oikeanlaiseen tunnelmaan. Levyn päättävä alkuperäisenäkin loistava Burzum laina on mitättömän pienillä muutoksilla saatu kuulostamaan omanlaiseltaan. (Mega) 8/10

Toinen vaihtoehto # 168

Lähetään siitä että tämä on EP, eli Extended Play. Totisesti, sillä pituutta on kertynyt ällistyttävä määrä, eli sekunnilleen mitä normi cdseen mahtuu. Kappaleita on seitsemän joista oikeastaan vain kolme on "varsinaisia biisejä". On mahtipontinen alkusoitto ja väliin on ympätty instrumentaalipsykedeliaa. Kaupan päälle levyn perään RB vetäisee Burzumin Dunkelheitin joka itseasiassa toimii helvetin hyvin kaikkine ksylofonipimputuksineen. Levyn hienoin teos on mielestäni Strange Horizon jossa varsinkin vokalisti/basisti Albertin laulu on parhaimmillaan. Toivon totisesti että tällaista meininkiä tulee jatkossakin. Nämä biisit ovat hämmästyttävän pitkiä ja erittäin hitaita mikä vaatii kuulijoilta aikaa ja keskittymistä. Pisimmillään biisit voi olla jotain parinkymmenen minuutin opuksia. Parasta on että ne toimivat elämyksinä. From the Void -kappale on hätkähdyttävä spektaakkeli joka sisältää piiitkän "rumpusoolon" jossa rumpali Void kunnioittaa legendaarisia rumpaleita. Itse kappaleen lauluosuutta pidin tympeänä death metal "kosiskeluna" mutta taustalla oleva toinen raita pelastaa pelin ja kärsimysnäytelmämäinen tunnelma vain korostuu. Levyn kannet on oikeastaan suoraa jatkumoa debyytille. Bändillähän on selkeät suunnitelmat tuleville julkaisuille pitkäksi aikaa ja toivon todellakin että poikain päät (tällaista mukaa ei kyllä täysjärkiset todennäköisesti tee) kestävät niin kauan että ne myös toteutuvat. Seuraava split 12" Orodruinin kanssa ilmestynee aivan kohtapuoliin, tuskin maltan odottaa! Tämäkin EP ilmestynee tuplavinyylinä joku erittäin synkkä päivä, ainakin rukoilen niin! (PA)

Wooah, this is truly a heavy, stringy stuff, I received from the distant Finland. REVEREND BIZARRE play Doom with much heartblood and prove it impressively on their 74 minutes EP (?). Actually, there are only four real songs on their second effort. But they last for between twelve and twenty minutes. It's not that this troup offers much breaks or variety - in contrary. They ennoble monotony into art.
Sipping, dragging mini epics determine this one. They sometimes repeat some riffs that gives the songs nearly a hypnotic feeling. Nevertheless this band has an undescribable aura and they somehow convey a strange feeling of felicitousness within all the total desperation. Because these songs are the embodiment of musical suffering, of a total surrender and melancholy. But one feels comfortable within all these mourning arias. At least this is my feeling and those who know me can confirm that I'm normally all but a melancholic person. The vocals are actually clean, but depending on the mood they can also be snarling or growling. Hard stuff, there's no doubt about.

In any case, this CD is only for the hardest of the hard, for the eagle owl within the fogeys. Who associates Doom only with CANDLEMASS or SOLITUDE AETERNUS will be fairly shocked!!! Overlong songs like "Dunkelheit" or "From The Void" are totally morbid - but impressive! REVEREND BIZARRE are the Gods of all dreary Metal! (Online February 6, 2004)

Reverend Bizarre on suomalaisen doom-metallin ehkä tunnetuin bändi. Sukulaisyhtyeitä ei montaa ole, ja jos onkin, ne eivät ainakaan ole päässeet yhtä hyvin esille kuin tämä kolmimiehinen turkulaisryhmä. Pastori Oudon toiselle täyspitkälle levylle on kertynyt mittaa noin 74 minuuttia. Vinyylimittaa levyn optimaalisena pituutena pitävänä musadiggarina minun on vaikea ymmärtää moista. Levy olisi parempi, jos se ei olisi näin pitkä. Koska Reverendin musiikki ei kuitenkaan ole järin monipuolista, alkaa levy väistämättä puuduttamaan jo puolivälissä. Harbinger Of Metal on vain seitsemän biisin levy, mutta kokonaiskestoltaan on noin kaksi ja puoli Slayerin Reign In Bloodia.

Doom-metal ja vanhakantainen heavyrock on bändillä hallussa. Kolmimiehisen orkesterin levyn aloituskappaleet Harbinger ja Strange Horizon ovat mukaansatempaavia biisejä. Homma eteneekin hyvin, mutta kun neloskappale From The Void alkaa, ei loppua sitten meinaa tullakaan - se koittaa vasta yli 20 minuutin kuluttua. Biisissä tutustutaan rumpali Earl Voidin kykyihin. Vaikka mies paukuttaa sydämensä kyllyydestä ja varmastikin hyvin, ei tylsähkö kappale jaksa kiinnostaa näin kauan. Laulajabasisti Sir Albert on pätevä äänenkäyttäjä, mutta runsaista soitto-osuuksista johtuen hänen lauluaan kuullaan valitettavan vähän.

Reverend Bizarre on kumminkin genrensä eliittiä. Levyn soundit ovat tyylipuhtaat ja korvia hivelevät.

Toisin niin sanotun "second opinionin" Kimmo Jaramon ansiokkaaseen arvioon, mutta ajattelin tämän olevan tarpeen enemmän doom-fanaatikon näkökulmasta.

En aio niinkään paneutua levyn pituuteen, joka ei mielestäni ole ollenkaan liian pitkä. Vaikka yleensä olenkin lyhyiden kokonaisuuksien mies, tällä kertaa kääntyy mielipide päälaelleen. Eli olisin toivonut levyä vieläkin pidemmäksi, kaiken kuulemani mukaan äänityssessioissa nimittäin jäi yksi kappale ylim ja nimenomaan CD-formaatin rajoitusten vuoksi.

Levy alkaa kolmeminuuttisella introlla, jonka jälkeen päästään yhtyeen ensimmäisellä kunnolliseen levitykseen päässellä demolla ensi kerran koettuun "Strange Horizon" kappaleen kimppuun. Se on muuten parantunut huimasti, vaikka se oli jo silloinkin nautinnollinen pläjäys.

Levyllä on siis oikeastaan vain neljä "kappaletta", sekä välipaloina kolme siivua, joista lyhin on hieman vajaat kaksi minuuttia ja pisin lähes neljäminuuttinen veto. Juuri tästä syystä levy on monessa paikassa erheellisesti nimetty MCD:ksi tai EP:ksi, vaikka sisältöä on tuo jo mainitun täyden CD:n verran. Levyn viimeisenä kappaleena kuullaan Kummallisen Pastorin näkemys Burzum:in "Dunkelheit" -kappaleesta, joka on kokenut karun kohtalon ja on venytetty reilusti yli 12-minuuttiseksi.

Levyn soundimaailma hivelee täydellisyyttä, nimenomaan doom metallin olleessa kyseessä. Ainoastaan muutamassa paikassa huomaa kolmehenkisen yhtyeen rajoitukset, kuten esimerkiksi kitaran soinnun alkaessa kiertämään kesken riffin. Eikä yksi mies yhdellä kitararaidalla saa enempää aikaan, kun tässä tapauksessa vielä näyttää siltä, että mihinkään ihmeellisiin studiokikkailuihin ollaan päätetty olla ryhtymättä.

Albertin ääni on kehittynyt aimo loikkauksin ja yhtye soittaakin tiukkana pakettina. Lisäksi levylle on ripauteltu hieman kosketinsoittimia, jotka tuovat mukavasti uutta tunnelmaa mutteivät missään vaiheessa pääse hallitsemaan.

Kyseessä on siis suomalaisen doom metallin merkkitapaus, jollaisia ei kovin montaa ole tähän maahan mahtunut. Nekin harvat joita jo on, ovat yleensä tunnustettu vasta vuosia myöhemmin.

Erik: Vorig jaar werd ik hard getroffen door zowel de debuut CD van deze Finse mannekes, als ook hun optreden op de eerste sessie van het Doom Shall Rise festival. Mijn enthousiasme temperde met een wat nare split 7” release afgelopen zomer met de heavy metal band Ritual Steel, waar de liefde om erkend te worden als metalband me wel erg tegen de borst stuitte en ik het destijds gepresenteerde “Blood On Satan’s Claw” eigenlijk ervoer als een wel erg slechte Mercyful Fate nummer. Maar zie, de hemel daalde neer op ons, de bliksem trof me en varkens kunnen vliegen.

Met “Harbringer Of Metal” is er namelijk een dijk van een CD afgeleverd. De titel smaakt wrang maar wie durft er nog openen met een doom instrumentaal titelnummer? Wie last tijdens een non-live album een quasi drumsolo in (“From The Void”)? Deze CD biedt echt alles wat je in muziek van de doomsoort wil horen. IJzersterke riffs, die wel eenvoudig klinken maar net met een twist of verrassende wending op de proppen komt. Strakke loodzware productie. Als ik Black Sabbath’s debuut zeg, snap je het wel… Maar er staan enkele juweeltjes van klassieke doom op die minimaal vijftien minuten klokken, of nog sterker, een CD die als EP(!) gepresenteerd wordt maar wel even 74 minuten duurt en eigenlijk door de sfeer helaas zo voorbij raast (en dat voor doom metal!). Er staat geen enkel nummer op waar je van denkt dat alles zo uitgesponnen en ellenlang duurt, hoelang het nummer ook voort dreunt. Verder valt de kuise zang van Albert Witchfinder op, een andere sterke troef van deze band. Ten opzichte van “In The Rectory” is Reverend Bizarre gegroeid naar betere nummers, maar zeker ook naar de kunst om een CD meer afwisselend te laten klinken.

When I first heard the demo of those Finish true doom metallers I was totally shocked. Their torturously slow traditional doom metal was simply amazing. A thunder in the peaceful, withering doom metal sky. Their debut `In The Rectory Of The Bizarre Reverend` is -in my opinion- the black doom metal bible of nowadays, together with the debut of US doomsters Abdullah. Those two masterpieces manage to catch the spirit of doom metal and spread it to those that will come after them.

But enough about the past: let`s move to the present. To tell you the truth I wasn't expecting for the band to release again a record of such a quality as their debut. This thought immediately withered when I came across their second masterpiece `Harbinger of Metal`, which is considered to be an EP and yet it is 74 minutes long!

The diving into the depths of hell has already been started on the debut, but now they are reaching the total doom metal abyss. 7 tracks, -like the 7 gates of hell- you will find in this release. The opening track "Harbinger", prepares the listener for what is about to follow. Like a creeping ghost it introduces us to the Bizarre world. The doom metal ceremony -that has just started- continues. `Strange Horizon` is well known from the `Slice Of Doom` demo and in my opinion it is one of the best compositions that the band has ever written. The dark narration of "The Ambassador", prepares the listener for the next track that is called "From The Void", a doom metal hymn born within the circles of hell, under the dance of ghosts with names like Black Sabbath, Saint Vitus, Pagan Altar, Pentagram etc. A very dark and obscure track, it is maybe the heaviest tune ever written by the band. Obscure atmosphere, creeping drums, heavy riffs, a trip to the darkest pits. The following track `The Wandering Jew` is slow and heavy as an elephant, while meanwhile very melodic. `Into The Realms Of Magickal Entertainment` is a dark mystic and obscure tune with no vocals that introduces the listener to the final chapter… `Dunkelheit`. This is a cover. Originally this track belongs to the Norwegian black metal band Burzum, and it appeared on their `Filosofem` album. In both versions words are meaningless to describe this track. A black mourn that should be listened during those strange hours just before the dawn and just after the long night hours, when the skies are painted in their darker colors and the silence seems to be almost deathlike. In this track the band shows once more a more aggressive feeling in some vocal parts. Possibly they want to pay tribute to the original tune, which is characterized by the aggressive meanwhile mournful vocals of Varg Vikernes (the only Burzum member).

Well to make a general conclusion about the new stuff I would point out that the band has become slower, heavier and darker! Even the vocals have become darker and from time to time, they become more aggressive as I pointed out earlier. In my opinion this release is a must for every doom metal fan. Reverend Bizarre have managed once more to drive us on a trip through hell and just for this, they are worth our respect.

Reverend Bizarren levytysura lähti liikkeelle takkuisesti. Debyytti ei päässyt esille juuri lainkaan levy-yhtiöstä johtuneista syistä. Toisaalta yhtyeen musiikkityyli ei kuulu valtavirtaan, joka paistattelisi listoilla. Uuden yhtiön myötä lähtökohdat parantuivat.

Reverend Bizarre ansaitsee paikkansa doom metallin kärkinimien joukossa. Siinä, missä moni nuoremman polven edustaja kääntää doominsa stoner rockiksi, turkulais-lohjalainen Reverend Bizarre pureutuu tyylisuuntansa ytimeen.

Trion kakkoslevy on äärettömän hidasta äänimaiseman maalailua. Keinot ovat yksinkertaiset, mutta toimivat. Bändin innovatiivisuus kutoo näennäisen helpon oloisten sointukuvioiden ympärille dynaamisuutta kasvattavia nyansseja, ja kokonaisuus on vaikeampi saavutus kuin voisi kuvitella. Harbinger of Metal on osoitus synkän metallin voittokulusta aikana, joka ei lyö doomia olalle. Paljon siitä saa myös syyttää bändejä, mutta Reverend Bizarre kantaa ylpeästi doomin lippua. Reverend Bizarre is probably the best band in doom metal today. Explicit, huh? I really can't find many other bands that can compete them (apart from While Heaven Wept, Orodruin and a few more), but I believe that at this high level the term competition is relevant and no one really cares. Anyway that's another conversation and let's get back to "Harbinger of metal". It's my one and only proof for that explicit statement. It's an original doom metal record with all the elements of the genre.

I have to say that Reverend Bizarre have evolved since the early days of "Slice of doom" and this is clear from the orchestration, which is richer and more atmospheric. The use of sound samples and some keyboards are a step onwards for the band, which seems more open-minded than in previous periods. However the more things change, the more remain the same, right? And what does this mean? That they are the slowest (without crossing the fields of sludge), the heaviest (without using studio tricks) and the darkest (without being corpse painted or anything like this) band on the planet. They are not re-inventing the wheel, they keep the tradition of St.Vitus, Black Sabbath, Trouble, Candlemass and all the other monsters of doom metal. Albert's voice is a "trademark" for the band and I think that is the main reason of minimizing the sense of time. You listen to a song of 18 minutes duration, but you think that only two or three minutes have passed. This Cd is extended to 74 minutes and it's one of the best releases this year. Usually I do not talk about specific songs, but I believe that "From the void", "Strange horizon" and "Dunkelheit" are the highlights of this cd (I mentioned almost all of them). The production is better than "In the rectory..." and the artwork is nice and recognizable (the goat must be Reverend's Eddie). I do not have much to add, except from another explicit statement. Buy it!

Finland`s Reverend Bizarre really took the term EP (extended play) quite literally. "Harbinger of Metal" clocks in at 74 minutes, yet it`s not a full-length. Once again these 3 guys proved they are one of the best "new" bands within doom metal. Where the debut album, "In the Rectory of the Bizarre Reverend" displayed doom that had a strong resemblance to Cathedral due to the groovy parts, "Harbinger of Metal" isn`t groovy at all and can be compared to classic doom-acts (I prefer the term classic where RB uses the term true doom) like Pentagram, Saint Vitus, Witchfinder General and Revelation to name a few. Personal faves on this EP are "Strange Horizon" and "The Wandering Jew". Especially the latter is destined to become a classic in doom metal history. Another track that draws attention is "From the Void" which incorporates a solo-spot for drummer Void and it`s pretty cool that Reverend Bizarre dare to do such things. Closing track on this release is a coverversion of Burzum`s "Dunkelheit" and Reverend Bizarre managed to do an excellent version of this song. Overall this EP is a must have. Not only because of the songs and the musical talent but also because of the heavy production which has a prominent part for the bass-guitar. Last but not least I`d like to mention Albert`s vocals; this guy displays a vocal-style that fits this type of doom so well. Based on all music I have heard so far I am already looking forward hearing more of these 3 guys.

As you will see in the best of 2003 section in our site this CD has a prominent position among the others. This year we had some very interesting releases and “Harbinger Of Metal” came to end the year in the most magnificent way.
I won’t spare anymore your time with praising words about the band. “Harbinger Of Metal” is far more qualitative than it’s preceding for many-many reasons. The production has reached the highest levels of perfection and it’s very compact. The orchestration is richer, meaning that Reverend bizarre put some water in their wine. The insertion of some keyboards and sound samples make the whole dark atmosphere even more tangible. Listen for example the ingenious use of sound sample in “From The Void” and experience the hellish atmosphere. This doesn’t entail that Reverend Bizarre are moving towards a more commercial approach of their music, because you will easily understand that “Harbinger Of Metal” is two times heavier, slower and depressive than “In The Rectory…”.
As for the compositions, even the lengthier ones are keeping the interesting of the audient until the last second. Their music is demanding, as every doom metal release that respects itself. The purpose for listening this CD must be solid. This is supposed to be an EP, but the 74 minutes duration makes it an official full length CD. I invite all the doom metal devotees to buy this CD and listen to one of the best doom metal bands our times have.

At last! The Finnish Reverend Bizarre has returned again from spiritual Lohja to continue his sermon and what sermon it is this time!!! It's dark, hateful and heavy as hell!
"Harbinger Of Metal" has exceeded my expectations. Since their last LP "In The Rectory..." and the split they did with Ritual Steel I personally did not know what more to expect from this band. Albert "Witchfinder" has proven that his voice is without limits and along with Peter Vicar's heavy guitars and Void's incredible drumming they truly make them one of my top doom metal bands ever.
Every single spin is filling the room with darkness and suffering pain. Hate and agony all sum up and eventually exploding out in the open leaving everyone jawdropping. Walking in the footsteps of St. Vitus and Witchfinder General they managed to slowly set their own path, create a distinguish and unique sound and stay true.
Enjoy more than 70 minutes of pure doom metal. A combination of slow, ultra heavy riffage and the clean vocals of Albert "Witchfinder" (except some harsh ones in "Dunkelheit") will make you even more hooked on the Reverend Bizarre's sermon.
One of this EP's highlights is the drumming solo of Void as well as the Burzum cover version of "Dunkelheit". Highly recommended for all Doom metal fans. Call yourselves worthy after giving it a couple of spins.

Doom-metalli on yhä edelleen erittäin vaikea laji laajassa metallin maailmassa. Kappaleiden pituudet ja rakenteet ovat yksinkertaisesti äärimmäisen vaikeasti lähestyttävissä varsinkin lajiin tutustuville ihmisille, mutta lopullisen kauneuden ja pointin löydyttyä homma alkaakin maistua erittäin hyvältä. Näin tapahtuu varsin usein varsinkin Reverend Bizarren kohdalla, joka on tällä hetkellä ehkäpä Suomen kuumin nimi doom-rintamalla. Viime vuonna saatiin ulos debyytti, välissä kuultiin tyylistä poikkeava splitti ja nyt on vuorossa hieman virheellisesti EP:ksi nimitetty teos Harbinger Of Metal. 75 minuuttinen mammutti sisältää todella pitkiä kappaleita, muutaman lyhyemmän sekä ennakkoon kovan kiinnostukseni herättäneen Burzum-coverin kappaleesta Dunkelheit. Doom!

En ole niinkään fanaatikko tällä rintamalla, mutta Reverend Bizarre vakuuttaa jälleen kerran lähes horjumattoman tyylitajunsa ja rehellisen ilmapiirinsä ansiosta. Harbinger of Metal alkaa tunnistettavalla introlla, jonka jälkeen päästään pureutumaan itse mammuttiin. Strange Horizon ja The Ambassador ilmentävät alusta alkaen yhtyeen kehitystä ja varsinkin laulun parantumista entisestään. Hitaat ja mahtipontiset kappaleet tarjoavat varmasti juuri sitä mitä on kaivattukin, mutta ei toista edellistä levyä juurikaan. Todella monen kuuntelun jälkeen on ikävä myöntää From The Voidin olevan koko levyn ainoa kompastuskivi. 20 minuuttinen kappale ei yksinkertaisesti jaksa kiinnostaa toistavan kaavansa takia, ja vaikka rumpusoolo onkin todella vaikuttava, tulee tämä kokonaisuus skipattua monella kuuntelukerralla. Loppulevy onkin sen sijaan silkkaa juhlaa, joten oikeastaan tuo yksi notkahdus hieman harmittaa. Vaihtelevan laahaavat maisemat saapuvat lopulta 12-minuuttiseen mahtavaan kliimaksiinsa odotetun Dunkelheitin muodossa, enkä osaa edes sanoin kuvata kyseisen coverin onnistuneisuutta.

Kolmihenkinen yhtye vaikuttaa erittäin pieneltä kokonaisuudelta jopa doomin saralla, mikä heijastuukin melkoisen vahvasti muutamiin kohtiin levyllä. Yhdellä kitaralla ei yksinkertaisesti saada kaikkea kaivattua aikaan ilman äänen kiertämisiä ja muita ikävyyksiä, mutta ainakin kokonaisuudesta näkee ettei studiossa ole juurikaan alettu nappuloilla kikkailemaan. Ehtaa tavaraa on kyseessä! Albertin laulu on kehittynyt entisestään yhä jylhemmäksi ja vaikka pastori joutuukin soittamisensa tieltä hieman vähentämään vokaaleitaan, ovat saarnat kaiken kaikkiaan mahtavia. Yleisesti ottaen yhtyeen soitto yhdistettynä levyn äänimaailmaan lähentelee silkkaa doom-täydellisyyttä. Tämä kaikki tiivistyy luonnollisesti ehdottomaan tunnelmaan, joka on varmasti jokaiselle doomista pitävälle mieleen.

Valituksen sanaa en juurikaan löydä mainitsemani From The Voidin lisäksi. Demoiltakin evoluution kautta levylle päätyneet pätkät ja kappaleet toimivat erinomaisesti, yhteensoitti toimii ja tunnelma nousee tietyissä tilanteissa kuunneltuna jopa karmivan hyväksi. Levy saattaa olla vaikeasti lähestyttävissä ja jos tyylilaji on vieras, kannattaa ehkä lämmitellä jollakin deathia ja doomia yhdistelevällä yhtyeellä. Jos taasen kaipaa silkkaa doomia ja Reverendin mahtipontinen tyyli miellyttää, tarjoaa tämä 75 minuuttinen kokonaisuus varmasti kunnon herkkua korvien täydeltä. Reverend Bizarre vakuutti jo ensimmäisellä levyllään, mutta voisin väittää tämän nousevan tunnelmiltaan jopa Rectoryn yläpuolelle yhdestä huonosta kappaleesta huolimatta. Toivottavasti hyvä meininki jatkuu tulevaisuudessa, sillä ainakin tällä hetkellä Reverend Bizarre kuuluu minun doom-listani kärkeen.

Todella mahtava paketti doomia yhdellä ikävällä väliinputoajalla.

- From The Void on koko 20-minuuttisella kestollaan melkoisen puuduttava, eikä jaksa parin kuuntelun jälkeen ainakaan yllekirjoittanutta kiinnostaa. Todella vaikuttava rumpusoolo pelastaa kuitenkin osan kappaleesta. Levyillä on aina "se huonoin kappale" ja tällä kertaa se osui Voidin piikkiin. Jos tämä pudotettaisiin pois, niin se huonoin olisi joku muu.

This album has been recorded by Spinefarm Records, and it lasts 74 Minutes, which is pretty long for a 7 song-album, this was also their first album recorded by Spinefarm Records, it's a pretty good album for people who like this album, it's just true Doom Metal, slow but with heavy riffs!

The first song "Harbinger", starts with a low-pitch grunt, and directly after that (so at first you think 'hey a heavy album', but I was all wrong), the slow riffs start to play, and you directly notice they're very powerfull, but for some people (like me) too slow.

Another song which lasts 20 Minutes is called "From the Void", this song starts very slow, and keeps on going very slow, after about 2:30 minutes the vocals 'kick in' with a very slow speech, (as I prefer fast Black Metal riffs and such, iam nearly falling a sleep from this kind of music) People who like real Doom Metal, without the use of proper fancy stuff like Synth's and Keyboards, will like this album.

A song with a little bit more power and speed is "The Wandering Jew", this song starts pretty slow like all the other songs, but after about 2:00 minutes the speed will get a bit better, for this band that is :).

I haven't got much to say about this album, although to my opinion it get's very 'boring' for someone who likes faster riffs than this, apart from that, it's a great album, for the people who like this kind of music ofcourse!

Currently iam not reviewing all the songs of this album, so iam skipping onto the last one, which is called "Dunkelheit", this song has the same attitude as the other songs I've written about, it's slow, but with powerfull riffs, and it starts slow, and somewhere around the middle, the vocals start, and with a little bit of vocal-work, they continue with the instrumentals again, and at 8:50 minutes another vocal part starts, with a bit of a radio-like voice he starts talking, and when this part has ended, the song enters the outro...

Es passiert doch sehr selten, dass ich über Wochen hin mit gespannter Vorfreude auf ein Album warte, aber im Falle von "Harbinger of Metal" war die Wartezeit kaum auszuhalten. Schließlich war das Debut "In the Rectory of the bizzare Reverend" eine unbeschreibliche Großtat, ein Album das sich ohne weiteres in die unvergesslichen Klassiker des Doom Metals einreiht. Alles andere als einfache Voraussetzungen für den Nachfolger also.
Reverend Bizarre hatten Veränderungen im Vergleich zu ihrem ersten Album angekündigt, die sich auch bemerkbar machen, aber zum Glück nicht den wesentlichen Kern berühren. Auch "Harbinger of Metal" enthält diesen unglaublich zähfliessenden epischen Doom und das ist verdammt gut so! Die größten Abweichungen finden sich wohl beim 20minütigen "From the Void" (inklusive fünfminütigen Drum(!)-Solo), welches derart spartanisch, monoton und dunkel gehalten ist, dass man fast meinen könnte, dass Skepticism, die finnischen Großmeister des Funeral Doom, ihre Finger im Spiel gehabt hätten. Aber auch das hochklassige "The Wandering Jew", bei dem zweifellos alle Trademarks der Band zu finden sind, zeigt sich mit seinem starken 70er Einschlag und leichten Avancen in Richtung Maryland Doom von einer Seite, die auf dem Debut noch nicht vertreten war.
Das nach dem ebenfalls extrem düsteren Intro "Harbinger" folgende "Strange Horizons" ist jedoch ein ganz klassischer Reverend Bizarre Song, der in der Tradition solcher Hämmer wie "The Hour of Death" und "Cirith Ungol" eine ebenso wunderschöne Höllenfahrt darstellt. Beendet werden die opulenten 74 Minuten Spielzeit (die sich im wesentlich auf vier(!) Stücke aufteilen) mit der vielleicht größten Überraschung, einem Cover von Burzums "Dunkelheit". Trotz aller tiefen Abneigung gegen das faschistoide Geschwafel des Herrn Vikerness komme ich nicht drumherum, das Original schon stark zu finden, aber was Reverend Bizarre aus diesem Song machen ist nahezu unbeschreiblich! Obwohl keine grundlegenden Veränderungen vorgenommen werden (mit Ausnahme des Großteils cleanen Gesangs), klingt "Dunkelheit" fast wie aus der Feder der Finnen. Selten war ein Cover so notwendig, denn was hierbei herausgekommen ist, ist so beklemmend und ergreifend wie ein Stück Musik nur sein kann.
Als kleine Obskurität am Rande sei noch das Gemälde eines Vierjährigen erwähnt, dem Reverend Bizarre einen gewichtigen Teil des Booklets widmen. In Kombination mit den oft bitter-zynischen Texten bleibt da wohl nur zu sagen: Finnish humour at it's best...

Abschließend betrachtet ist "Harbinger..." sicherlich ein Album, das im Vergleich zum Debut nach einer längeren Kennenlernphase verlangt, da die Songs gleichermaßen vielseitiger und sperriger sind. Ganz heranreichen an "In the Rectory..." kann es meiner Ansicht nach nicht, da die ganz ganz großen Momente etwas dünner gesät sind, aber ein hervorragendes Album ist es ohne Frage. REVEREND BIZARRE seem to be very prolific and this is something that gives me great joy. A year after their debut “In the Rectory of…” and only a couple of months after the release of the “Blood on Satan’s Claw” limited edition split 7” (with RITUAL STEEL) they are back with their new EP titled “Harbinger of Metal”. Yes, you read correctly, although the release is 74 minutes long REVEREND BIZARRE insist on calling it an EP. Surprised? Why? After all, they are not a usual band, why should they conform to usual rules? So, EP it is! Well, if we had an excuse to be surprised when “In the Rectory of…” first came out, we certainly do not have one now as we know the great capabilities of the Finnish trio. In terms of the band’s sound “Harbinger of Metal” does not deviate a lot from their debut. That is, they still play ultra slow but pure and traditional doom. Those not familiar with the band imagine something like CATHEDRAL of the “Forest of Equilibrium” period but with clean vocals, and consequently imagine something deeply influenced by the SAINT VITUS school of doom metal. And if the sound has not changed significantly, the same cannot be said for the structure of the album (oh, I forgot, it’s an EP). Contrary to their debut, in “Harbinger of Metal” next to the “proper” songs you’ll also find 3-minute instrumentals or intros with narration, as in the case of “The Ambassador”, which help in creating the right mood and generating the desired atmosphere. The main compositions are as we expected and wanted them to be from REVEREND BIZARRE. Extremely long and ultra heavy songs, torturing slow riffage, guitars as downtuned as it gets, and deep and slow pounding drums accompanied by a wall of bass. Add to these the mournful lyrics, the desperate woeful vocals of Magister Albert (who’s singing style in “Strange Horizon” reminds that of a Gregorian monk) and you get an idea. No you don’t! You have to listen to the actual songs in order to feel their power, be allured by the music, experience the heaviness, and ultimately understand this album. Despite its very long duration, “Harbinger of Metal” keeps the listener’s interest at peak levels throughout, and will often make you wonder how something so pure and seemingly simple can be so enchanting. Well, this is exactly were the talent of REVEREND BIZARRE lies, in their ability to make you listen to a 18-minute song like “Wandering Jew” (it refers to Jesus) without making you feel tired or bored, but instead making you wanting to listen to it repeatedly and completely concentrated. As you have already guessed I consider the new offering of the REVEREND as an outstanding release. A special mention must be made to the excellent 5-minute drum solo of Mr. Earl of Void, which is embedded in the appropriately titled 20-minute epic “From the Void”. Plus, the “clean” and “deep” production is unbelievably good for such a release and it fits perfectly to the band’s sound. The album closes with “Dunkelheit”, which is a BURZUM cover. Although I admit I despise Varg Vikernes and all that he represents and despite the fact that I was initially biased against the band’s choice to cover a BURZUM song, I have to admit that the resulting song is awesome. Yet I cannot compare it with the original as I haven’t heard it. When “In the Rectory…” first came out I wrote that REVEREND BIZARRE is one of the most talented and promising bands in the old-fashioned traditional doom metal genre and that these (then) new-comers have a lot to offer. Today, I stand by it and I even amplify my statement. “Harbringer of Metal” is a necessity for all doomsters. REVEREND BIZARRE can insist as much as they want to about this being an EP; I am going to mark it as a proper album anyway.

Den Doomhammer des ausklingenden Jahres 2003 bringen wohl die einzigartigen Reverend Bizarre aus dem finnischen Badeort Tampere. Dachte man schon beim Debüt, daß es wohl intensiver, emotionaler und überrollender nicht geht, doch, geht es. Schon der Opener macht klar, daß man bei Reverend Bizarre nicht mit Kompromissen rechnen darf. Drei Minuten lang walzen die drei Irrsinnigen auf einer minimalen Anzahl von Akkorden herum, haben weniger einen Song im Sinn, denn vielmehr eine instrumentale Einleitung, die ganz urplötzlich in den zweiten Song umschlägt. Dieser nennt sich „Strange Horizons" und kommt dem Debütalbum doch recht nahe. Ganz langsam und bedächtig, doch mit ungeheurer emotionaler Wucht packen die majestätischen Riffs und Melodien Dich, zermahlen Deine Seele. Albert singt hier leidenschaftlicher denn je seinen Weltschmerz hinaus, mit einer Theatralik, die Dich ehrfurchtsvoll erstarren lassen wird. „The Ambassador" folgt auf dem Fuße, doch was ist das? Nur ein wenig Bass, eine ruhige, fließende Melodie und dunkle, halb gesprochen wirkende Vocals, wow. Das hat was von den sphärischen Gothbands der 80er, alte Fields of the Nephilim und dergleichen, wo Gothic noch nicht zum kitschig – pathetischen Mist verkommen war, sondern mit seiner Düsternis die Welt in ihren Grundfesten zum Erzittern brachte. Nach dem Botschafter kommt „From the Void", die ultimative Steigerung des Reverend Bizarrschen Stils. Funeral Doom nennt man soetwas wohl, aber eben mit dem entscheidenden Kick R&B, sprich Reverend and Bizarre, hargh! Eine erhabene Monotonie entfaltet ihren hypnotischen Groove. Albert presst aus seiner geschundenen Kehle ganz tiefe, düstere Laute heraus, fast schon geflüstert, wenig bis gar nicht mit Melodie versehen. Auch hier kann man die Parallelen zum Uraltgothicrock der 80er ziehen, wieder fallen mir Fields of the Nephilim ein, gesanglich wohlgemerkt, denn instrumental gibt man sich dem puren Doom hin, zermalmt alles unter seinen Gitarrenriffs. Was dann allerdings kommt ist der Höhepunkt des Wahnsinns, zeugt von großem Mut und noch größerem Talent. Ein verficktes Drumsolo des Earl of Void über mehrere Minuten. Er zaubert merkwürdige Klangfiguren und Beats, die selbst mir als Nichtschlagzeuger keineswegs Langeweile bereiten. Hiernach setzt wieder die ultimative Riffmaschinerie ein, schrammt behäbig spacige Akkorde aus den Boxen, welche kaum mehr soetwas wie Melodie offenbahren und doch eine den Hörer fesselnde Struktur besitzen. Reverend Bizarre haben im Vergleich mit ähnlichen Bands wie Esoteric wesentlich mehr Rhythmusgefühl, Groove, wie man so schön sagt. Und jener wird auch in „The wandering Jew" gleich von Beginn an mit einer absoluten spirituellen Hingabe zelebriert. Bass und Schlagzeug geben hier den Ton an, spinnen kleine Klangfäden, bis dann irgendwann Peter Vicars Gitarre einsetzt und trotz der Langsamkeit der Songs rockt. Ja, diese Bastarde rocken. Durchdachte, mitreißend arrangierte Hardrockelemente werden hier auf Doom gesetzt und dadurch noch eindringlicher. Albert wiederum mit seiner einzigartigen Stimme zieht Dich sogleich in seinen Bann. Seine Gesangslinien sind geradlinig und beschwörend. Im weiteren Verlauf geht das Stück wieder zurück zum absoluten Doom, schleppt sich träge dahin, ohne aber seinen magischen Ausdruck zu verlieren. Der Solopart ist von ergreifender Schönheit, durchtrennt das Band zwischen Körper und Seele, erhebt den Geist auf eine höhere Ebene des Seins, während die Rhythmuscrew ganz schlicht die Takte mitzählt. Einmal noch geben sich Reverend Bizarre dann dem Heavyrock on Valium hin, der, etwas flotter im Tempo, auch seinen Platz bei vielen Heavybands der frühen 80er gehabt haben könnte. Man darf nicht vergessen, diese Scheibe ist 74 Minuten lang, fast so lang wie der Vorgänger. Auch „The wandering Jew" ist ein typischer Reverend Bizarre Song und doch eine weiterentwicklung dessen, was auf „In the Rectory..." geboten wurde. Verspielter, wesentlich verspielter, vor allem rhythmisch. Für meinen Geschmack begrüssenswert. Die drei Finnen haben sich hier als ihren Wurzeln zwar treu ergeben und doch experimentierfreudig erwiesen. Mit einem Funeral Doom Song konnte man doch nicht unbedingt rechnen, oder? Auch die urtypischen Songs sind nicht als Aufguß des alten Materials zu betrachten, sondern wurden um gewisse Nuancen aufgestockt, auf daß niemand den drei Nordmännern Ideenmangel vorwerfen kann. Wie weit kann sich eine traditionelle Doomband entwickeln? Reverend Bizarre zeigen es. Kein Stilbruch und doch ein Voranschreiten, ein Aufbauen auf bereits erreichtem Level. Neben ihrer tief brummenden Gitarre haben sie auch noch den tosenden Donnerbass, der sogar mancherorts in die Leadmelodien eingreift. Jener Bass ist auch Grundlage für „Into the Realms of magickal Entertainment", welches psychedelisch die Sinne streichelt. Nur Bass, ein paar Gitarrenlicks und im Hintergrund ein wenig Synthesizer, kaum hörbar, das ist dieser Song. Eine schwebende Klangwelt, absolut verzaubernd. Sie schafft Platz für den letzten Song im Repertoire dieses Albums, eine Coverversion des Burzum Songs „Dunkelheit", welcher sich ursprünglich auf der „Filosofem" befindet. Noch langsamer als das Original, dafür mit harmonischem Gesang ausgestattet trägt Dich dieser Song hinfort. Sein Ausdruck tiefster Hoffnungslosigkeit wird hier durch ein episches Feeling aufgemotzt, intensiviert. Peters Soli lassen Deine Emotionen überkochen. Aus einem vollkommen eisig – monotonen Stück haben Reverend Bizarre eine Hymne der Melancholie gemacht, weit genialer als das Original, wie ich finde, auch wenn ich zugeben muß, absolut in Varg Vikernes Metalphase vernarrt zu sein. Zum Ausklang dieses Stückes wird Albert noch ein wenig giftig, gesangstechnisch, kreischt haßerfüllt die Lyrics in die Unendlichkeit. Wenn man diesen Song nicht als absolut hypnotisch beschreiben kann, dann weiß ich auch nicht. Dieses Album ist ein überirdisches Meisterwerk, welches noch zu steigern eine Hürde sein dürfte. Aber bei Reverend Bizarre weiß man ja nie.

Doom metal ei ole kovinkaan mediaseksikästä, eikä Suomessa sillä itseään elätä. Reverend Bizarre on kuitenkin valinnut tämän hitaan, raskaan ja painavan tien kuljettavakseen, siitä täydet pisteet orkesterille. Lohjalaiskolmikko on murjonut musiikkiaan 90-luvun puolivälistä, ja ehtinyt tähän päivään mennessä julkaista jokusen lätyn ja esiintynyt muutamalla kokoelmalla. Nyt on kuitenkin aika näyttää mistä reiästä pässi kusee, ja kuinka kovaa – tätä tieteellistä koetta siivittämään on Spikefarmin kautta ruhjottu ulos melko kornisti nimetty Harbringer Of Metal –albumi.

Kuten tyylilajille on ominaista, levy lähtee ja etenee hitaasti kuin öljykatastrofista selvinnyt lokki kivisellä rannalla. Muutaman ensimmäisen minuutin ajan ehtii jo toivoa, josko levy olisi tehty vallan ilman vokaaleja, mutta illuusio särkyy Magister Albertin avatessa sanaisen arkkunsa Ozzymaisesti vonkuen. Parin irvistyksen jälkeen musiikkiin kuitenkin uppoaa syvemmälle, eikä hieman kompuroiden äänetty englantikaan enää haittaa. Äärimmäisen hidas poljento ja stoner-metallivaikutteet vetävät lämpimään syliinsä, ja ympäröivät asiat ja velvollisuudet alkavat tuntua yllättävänkin raskailta.

Harbringer Of Metal on ennenkaikkea mukava, paskan- ja pilvenhajuinen tuulahdus suomalaiseen metalliskeneen – positiivisessa mielessä. Musiikillisesti levyn hitaus degeneroituu välillä jopa niinkin pitkälle, että kuulija voi ihmetellä josko kyseessä onkin jonkunlainen soundcheck –levy, eikä kokonaisista kappaleista koostuva paketti. Mutta vaikka miehillä on vielä paljon matkaa edessään, on suunta kuitenkin jotakuinkin oikea.

Lienee turha sanoakaan, että Reverend Bizarren Harbringer of Metal on nimenomaan mielentilalevy, joka vaatii juuri oikean, viritellyn fiiliksen täyteen nautintoon. Ruuhkabussissa korvanapeissa jyrätessään se on lähinnä hermostuttava, mutta kynttilöiden loisteessa, syysmyrskyn raivotessa ulkona alkaa musiikista löytyä sitä paljon puhuttua itua. uh

Rumpusoolo suurin synti

Lohjan metallimiehet ovat kuunnelleet Balck Sabbathinsa turhankin perusteellisesti. Useita vanhemman polven doom-bändeiltä on myös napsittu vaikutteita, mutta omia ideoita ei oikein löydy. Siitä huolimatta kyseessä on jykeväsoundinen kokonaisuus. (VS)
