Dennis Wilson was the original drummer of The Beach Boys. However most drum parts on the Beach Boys records are played by Hal Blaine, Ricky Fataar and others. Rather than a drummer, Dennis was important for the band as songwriter ( Cuddle Up, Forever ), singer ( Do You Wanna Dance, Angel Come Home ) and the surfing member of the band. It was his idea that his brother Brian would start making songs about surfing. Dennis started writing songs in late 60's and soon became as good songwriter as his brother Brian. Dennis' best songs are on the albums Sunflower , Carl And the Passions - So Tough , Holland , L.A . and his solo album Pacific Ocean Blue . He also appeared in the cult film Two Lane Blacktop . In late 70's Dennis became badly alcoholized and lost his health. He died in a drowning accident in 1983. He wrote some of the best Beach Boys songs ever. Brian Wilson was, of course, an important influence for him but he was also interested in opera music, especially Richard Wagner. Dennis was at his best writing beautiful ballads. His music is often quite dark and eerie. Some of his songs were too dark for Beach Boys fans and other boys. For example a Carry Me Home, a song about a dying soldier in the Vietnam war was never released.
This is not meant to be the perfect Dennis Wilson page, just my small tribute to him.
