MAC:ssä tekstitiedostoilla ei ol loppupäätettä, vaan ne on nimetty 'IN', 'OUT' jne. Indeksitiedostojen pääte on 'TOC'. Eudoran kolme oletuskansiota ovat nimeltään IN.MBX (IN.TOC), OUT.MBX (OUT.TOC) sekä TRASH.MBX (TRASH.TOC). Näiden lisäksi ovat käyttäjän itse tekemät kansiot. Osoitekirja 'NickNames' on PC:ssä tiedosto nimeltään 'nndbase.txt'. (Yksi tapa) Siirto Eudorasta MozillaanOheinen tekstipätkä kopioitu osoitteesta http://www.cs.uu.nl/technical/services/email/eudora2moz/eudora2moz.html Kiitokset kirjoittajille.* Select Import from the Tools menu * Select Messages, click Next * Select Eudora, click Next * It should now import your Eudora messages (it automatically finds your Eudora mail directory). Eudora mail folders will be placed in a folder below Local Folders. This can take a while, depending on the amount of mail to be imported, of course Import Eudora address book (if any) * Select Import from the Tools menu * Select Address books, click Next * Select Eudora, click Next * Mozilla automagically imports your Eudora address book Siirto PC:ltä MAC:lle tai päinvastoin.MAC:n ja PC:n tiedostojen suurin ero on rivin loppumerkistä (New Line). You should not simply transfer the Eudora folder from one machine to another. The software must be properly installed on the new computer. Having installed the Eudora software on your new computer you can simply copy your mailbox files from your old machine to the new Eudora folder. That is basically all you have to do, but there are some complications, which are covered in this note. This note does not describe the installation of Eudora. It assumes that you have a NEW computer with a newly installed copy of Eudora, and an OLD computer with your old copy of Eudora with your old mailboxes and nicknames. Eudora mailboxesYou probably realise that Eudora stores your messages in files called "mailboxes". There are three standard mailboxes: In, Out and Trash. We'll assume that you don't want to transfer your Trash box. In addition to these standard mailboxes, you should have a number of your own mailboxesThe mailboxes are stored in the Eudora folder. On the PC this may be anywhere on the hard disk: you may have a folder called "Eudora" just within the C drive folder; or it may be hidden withing the "Program Files" folder. On the Mac, the Eudora folder is always inside the System folder. On the PC the mailbox files have a suffix ".MBX". So the In mailbox file is called "IN.MBX" and the Out mailbox file is "OUT.MBX". If you have a mailbox called "Department" the file for that will be called "DEPARTMENT.MBX". In addition to the .MBX files there are table-of-contents files called "IN.TOC", "OUT.TOC" and so on for each of the .MBX files. On the Mac the mailbox files themselves have no suffix and are called simply "IN", "OUT" and so on. The table-of-contents files have the .TOC suffix as on the PC. Transferring mailboxes to another machine of the same sort -- that is Mac to Mac or PC to PCThese instructions assume either that none of your mailbox files is too large to fit on a floppy disk or that you are able to perform the transfer from one machine to another using some other medium, such as a ZIP disk, or a network connection. If you have allowed your mailboxes to become that large you should consider deleting some of your messages on your old machine. If you do delete messages, remember to click the button in the bottom left corner of the mailbox window in order to compact the mailbox to regain space. This button is marked by figures like figures indicating the number of messages in the mailbox, the total amount of space that it occupies, and the amount of empty space that could be regained by compacting. The instructions also assume that you know how to copy and rename files on your Mac or PC. * Copy the mailbox files and the table-of-contents files onto a floppy disk
or ZIP disk, or transfer them across the network into a temporary folder on the
new machine Eudora configuration fileThe Eudora configuration is stored in a file called "EUDORA.INI" (on the Mac it is called "Eudora settings"). This file contains settings such as: * the names of the incoming and outgoing mail hosts It is usually possible to copy the configuration file from the old machine to the new one, and so preserve an identical environment. However this sometimes causes problems, and it is probably best to configure the program afresh on the new machine. If you do decide to copy the old configuration to the new machine, and if it does cause problems, you should quit Eudora and rename the configuration file (call it EUDORA.OLD or something like that). You could delete it, but it is probably safer to rename it, incase it is necessary to look at it for any reason. Then start up Eudora again, and it will create an empty configuration file, and you can then configure the program from scratch. Addressbooks (nicknames)The addressbook file file on the PC is called "nndbase.txt". On the Mac it is called "Eudora Nicknames". It is a simple matter just to transfer these files by floppy disk from the Eudora folder on the old machine to the Eudora folder on the new machine. On the PC there is a table-of-contents file (nndbase.toc) but there is no need to transfer this, as Eudora will re-create it.If you already have an addressbook on the new machine you can avoid overwriting it in one of two ways: * If your new machine has version 4 of Eudora (or a higher version) then it is possible to have multiple nickname files. You will have a "Nicknames" folder inside your Eudora folder and you can copy your old nickname file into this folder, and Eudora should pick it up. The nndbase.txt file in the Eudora folder will be treated as the main "Eudora Nicknames" file; any additional .txt file inside the Nicknames folder will be listed in the Addrewssbook window as an additional set of nicknames. (This works with Eudora 4.3 for Windows, but I have not tried it on a Macintosh.) * Another way of securing both sets of nicknames involves using a text
editor to combine the old and new addressbooks into a single file. Use a text
editor (Notepad on the PC or Simpletext on the Mac) to concatenate the files:
o open both the nickname files (one in your floppy disk, the other in
the Eudora folder). This will involve having two Notepad/Simpletext windows
open. Cross-platform transfersIf you are transferring from Mac ot PC or PC to Mac, using the Mac's ability to read PC disks, there is a complication due to the different ways in which new lines are handled on the two types of computer. You can get round this by saving the mailbox files as Word documents on the old machine, and converting them back to text only files on the new machine. To do this you need to make sure that Word on your new machine can read the Word documents produced on your old machine. There is usually no problem about this, since the new machine is likely to have a more recent version of Word. But if you are moving from an Office95 or Office97 setup to a Macintosh using Word v5.1, you will need a converter for the Mac. This works for the addressbook file as well. Another way of ensuring that the newline characters are converted correctly is
to transfer the mailbox files to your Sun account and then down onto the new
machine, using an FTP program (such as ws_ftp on a PC or Fetch on a Mac). In
both transfers ensure that you select the Text transfer (or ASCII transfer)
option. Julian Crowe PTMUSTA at UTU.FI | Under work 04.10.04 | |
