USB memory sticks and HDDBackgroundFor some reason Windows seems to recognize USB HDD:s with no problems Still it has problems with the memory sticks who should have the same kind of partitioning scheme as the HDD. For example there is some tools to use HDD in MSDOS and Win3.x but no tools to use memosy sticks. There is even problems to use large sticks in Win 98 even though they are from a manufacturer whose smaller sticks work with nno problem. One of those is Kingston, whose 1GB stick appeared with no driver for Win98. This is annoying, because there is some WIn98 installations in our laboratories, where people want to collect the data with a stick, because WIN98 is not recommended in our network. Besides those Win98 installations are mainly old slow, even i486 machines, where you can not use virus protection, because those programs take all the available power of the PC.
The good newsMy friend found a solution. He bought a Kingston 1GB stick
The new stick didn't work. . He had allready the drivers for the older and smaller drivers in his PC. He installed the drivers of the new stick to a WinXP installation and found the VID and PID of the stick from My Computer properties + Hardware + Device Manager + Universal Serial Bus controllers + USB Mass Storage device + Details + Device Instance Id. With this information he created new lines to musb5B.inf which seems to be a inf-file for Kingston memories (?) Copy lines, which begin with %USB\VID_ and USB\VID_ and edit the copied lines.
A driver for Win98 can be found from the abovementioned Kingston pages and I have a copy of it here Read the instructions here |
