Gulls -- Possible Heuglin's Gulls (or Siberian Gull, whatever
that means) and an unidentified gull
(c) Harry J Lehto
Photographed at Oulu Rubbish Tip, Finland, June 02, 1997
In all photographs note shape of the bird, and bill, long legs
ang tight trousers. The photographs were scanned from paper prints,
and then scanned. The color balance is not exact, but quite close
to reality as can be seen by some oranges in the background.
Figure 1. Possibly Larus cachinnans 2nd Calendar year
or a barabensis or a "1st summer type" 2cy Heuglin's Gull.

Figure 2. Heuglin's Gull 2nd Calendar year
Appears to be a "2nd summer type" 2cy bird
Figure 3. Heuglin's Gull 2nd Calendar year
Note quite uniform and rather pale greater coverts, spots on P3, P4,
a dark well defined tail band and a CLEAN white base.
Figure 4. Heuglin's Gull adult
Note wingpattern and that P1 and P2 are older, which is caused
by a peculiar molt pattern of the species ( L Jonsson, private comm.)
Or could it be an adult graelsii?
Figure 5. Heuglin's Gull 2nd Calendar year
Note again tail pattern, and rather clean undersides. The underwings are
very neatly patterend. Particularly the axillaries have very clean dark
brown-white pattern. Contrast increased during the printing of the image.
Figure 6. Possibly a Lar fus fus 3rd Calendar year
and not a heuglini..
