Also we failed in our attempt to get to Berlevaag due to snow conditions (March 31). March 25 Departure from Kaarina (SW FINLAND) at 07.00, picked up Teemu from Kangasala, and continued at 10.00. Stop at Ivalo (21.00-22.00) at Heikki Karhu's place. Arrival at midnight to Turku University Arctic field station at Kevo, Utsjoki. March 26 Departure from Kevo to Vestre Jakobselv, where we were based for the following week. March 26 14.30-19.00 Varangerbotn, Vestre Jakobselv - Nesseby Church March 27 7.35-12.00, 13.00-18.30 Vestre Jakobselv - Vadso - Kiby March 28 6.30- 19.00 Vadsoe, Kiby-Golnes-Ekkeroeya-Skallveg (excl Krampenes) March 29 6.30-9.30 Vestre Jakobselv, Vadsoe March 30 6.00-19.30 Krampenes, Vardoe, Yttre Kiberg March 31 6.15-19.30 Vadsoe, Varangerbotn, Tana, failed to get to Berlevaag, Nesseby, Vestre Jakobselv April 1 Departure at 7.30, Drive to Oulu checking the village dumps at Utsjoki and Karigasniemi. Arrive to Oulu at 23.30. Bad driving weather. April 2 Leave Oulu at 12.00 arrive to Kaarina at 20.00 =============================== CONTACTS, ACCOMODATION, MAPS, FOOD Contacts: 1) In Norway contact John Asmar Olsen 7896840 (home) in Norway and +47 7896840 (from outside Norway) 2) In Finland contact Heikki Karhu +358+(9)697 661014 (h) 3) Vestre Jakobselv campground (inquire if open) c/o Bernt Helmersen, Postboks 59, 9810 Vadsoe, Norway. Our main accomodation was in a small heated hut at Vestre Jakobselv Campgroud run by a Christian family and youth society for 250 NKr/night/hut (185FIM = 55DM = 40USdoll = 25UKPound), for the four of us. WC and showers in the main building (50 meter's distance). The stove in the hut has only one burner. Drinking water needs to be carried from the main building with a bucket (provided). We spent one night at Kevo, and one night at Harry's cousin's house in Oulu. Maps: The Finnish highway map 1:800 000 Autolijan Tiekartta covers the area, as well as all of Finland and shows all the main roads (about 50 FIM). Two good maps are available in Vadsoe bookstore, where Finnish, Norwegian and English are spoken. The store is located by the post office on the main shopping street, 100 meters from the coastal highway. A map of the scale 1:400 000 covers the whole Finnmark area, and is good in detail (70 NKr). A new map "Vegkart NORGE 1:250 000 Varanger -Blad 21" printed in 1992 shows the Varangerhalvoeya area West to Nuorgam and Tanafjord and East to the Russian boarder. This map is good in detail, but may be a little bit difficult to use in the car or in the field. Consider getting both Norwegian maps. ============================== VILLAGES along road 98 on northern Varangerfjord (with approximate distances in km) mentioned in the text. The area around the bridge is good for photography, the best location being on the right side just before the bridge. Best light between 06.00 and 12.00 Noon. YTTER KIBERG harbor. The whole harbor area is good for photography. There are two seawalls. The one facing the ocean is at it's best during morning hours (03.00-15.00), the shorter breaker facing the bay is good during late afternoon (18.00-02.00). VARDOE harbor.Whole area good. The Sun shines along the sea walls at about 6.00 and 18.00. Morning light best. EKKEROEYA Possibility for photography of Kittiwakes, alcids, Snow Bunting. HORNOEYA Supposed to be good, but we didn't visit the islands. HAMNINGBERG Continue along the coast from the Vardos tunnel. Supposed to be excellent for flying alcids. We didn't get there because of snow conditions. ================= WEATHER: March 26: 15.00 -3C 4m/s NE 8/8 St,Cb 2km snow showers 19.00 -3C 6m/s NE 8/8 St 20km March 27: 08.00 -2C 3m/s N 7/8 Sc >20km 12.00 0C 6m/s N 7/8 Sc,Cb 0.1-20km , very heavy showers from 10.00 to 12.00 16.00 -2C 7m/s N 8/8 Sc,Cb, >20km 18.00 -4C 7m/s N 7/8 Cb,Sc, >20km March 28: 08.30 -4C 8m/s W 4/8 Cu >20km (snowshower at 07.30) 12.00 -1C 11m/s W 1/8 Cu >30km 14.00 -1C 5m/s W 1/8 Cu >30km 16.00 -2C 5m/s W 2/8 Ac,Cu >30km (distant snowshowers) March 29: 06.30 -3C 10m/s N 8/8 St, Cb 0.1-10km, very heavy showers 09.00- -1C 12m/s N 8/8 St, Cb 0.1km, heavy snow for the rest of the day. (Loon species) Very few birds in widely separated locations. GAVIA ADAMSII (Yellow-billed Loon) A single individual about 400meters from the shore at Paddeby. PODICEPS RUFICOLLIS (Little Grebe) A single individual was twitched from Oulujoki (River Oulu), Oulu. PHALACROCORAX CARBO (Cormorant) an apparent concentration between Krampenes and Skallelv. PHALACROCORAX ARISTOTELIS (Shag) mostly at Vardoe, others were single individuals. ANAS PLATYRYNCHOS (Mallard) Numbers increased during our trip: eg. 3 pairs in Vadsoe harbour on March 25, but 13 on the 31st. Largest flock of 16 birds showed up on March 31st at Jakobselv (Jakob's river). SOMATERIA MOLLISSIMA (Common Eider) Appears to have been about twice as common as King Eider. Usually closer to the shore. SOMATERIA SPECTABILIS (King Eider) In harbors of Vadsoe, Vardoe and Yttre Kiberg close views were possible. Elsewhere the birds were usually far away from the shore and difficult to count. Most Eider males at those distances appeared to be in pure flocks, thus we assumed that the accompanying females were of the same species. When the females were close enough for positive identification, we were able to confirm that this was normally the case. Weather conditions must play a significant role in the total count for this species, more so than for the two other Eider species. POLYSTICTA STELLERI (Steller's Eider) As with the previous species, the harbours were good sites to study this species both on water and in flight. Elsewhere, unlike King Eider, the flocks of this species were very easy to locate. However, they posessed a different kind of an estimation problem caused by the high bird density of the flocks. Counting one by one the individuals Steller's Eiders in typical flocks of 100-200 birds was impossible, even trying to count them in tens was difficult. CLANGULA HYEMALIS (Oldsquaw) Individual birds and small flocks scattered whereever there was open water, sometimes very far away. The person who counted the King Eiders, usually also ended up counting the Oldsquaws. The only concentration was the estimated 4000 birds at Tana river delta. MELANITTA NIGRA (Common Scoter) The only individuals were east of Skallelv in 3 flocks (2/1, 10/8, 1/9) plus a single male. MELANITTA FUSCA (Velvet Scoter) Single individuals or pairs in widely scattered locations. MERGUS SERRATOR (Red-breasted Merganser) Most seen in calm waters: Nesseby- Jakobselv area, in the bays adjacent to the Isthmus of Ekkeroeya, and particularly the 956 individuals counted at Tana delta. HALIAEETEUS ALBICILLA (White-tailed Sea-Eagle) First individual an adult at Ekkeroeya on the 28th. Second individual on the 30th over Yttre Kiberg flying NE along the coastline. One adult was seen flying in the Western parts of the Tana Delta. One adult and a 1st winter (2 cal year) between Nesseby and Varangerbotn was seen on a couple occasions. Two adults over Varangerbotn on the 31st. AQUILA CHRYSAETOS (Golden Eagle) One 4 cal year (3rd winter) bird magnificiently straight over at the "Ishavet Info"-spot between Skippagurra and Varangerbotn. FALCO RUSTICOLUS (Gyr falcon) 2 birds - location withheld. LAGOPUS LAGOPUS (Willow Grouse) in all white winter plumage. Viljami became an expert in detecting these (almost) completely white birds hidden in snow from a moving car. One bird by the road side 50 kilometers South of Sodankylae (Finland), another dead one North of Sodankylae. Two birds on by the Varangerfjord road between Vadsoe and Vardoe, by the sign "Vadso 42km". An unidentified Lagopus sp seen breifly at Pahtavaara (Finland). VANELLUS VANELLUS (Lapwing) One of the best sightings during the trip. A very early individual on March 28, in Vadsoe, in the bay just east of the Harbour. Photographed. Compare this with the first Lapwing report from Finnish Lapland (Pursiheimo, text pager): 3 birds at Tervola, 50 km South of Rovaniemi on April 12! CALIDRIS MARITIMA (Purple Sandpiper) The rat of the shore. Numerous, yet sometimes difficult to see. And comes in "packs" too. LARUS sp. (Gulls) A complete lack of Lesser Black-backed Gull (L. fuscus) and Common Gull (L. canus) surprised us. LARUS ARGENTATUS (Herring Gull) and LARUS MARINUS (Greater Black-backed Gull) were both common all along the shore line, with the first one overnumbering the latter. Numbers of both species appeared to increase during our stay, e.g Vadsoe 26.3 Lar mar 40 Lar arg 180 and 31.3 Lar mar 50 Lar arg 500 LARUS HYPORBOREUS (Glaucous Gull) Numerous at Vardoe, elsewhere single individuals along the shore. The possibility of hybrids could not be excluded in most cases. LARUS GLAUCOIDES (Iceland Gull) in harbours only: Vardoe: 30.3: 2 (2 caly), one had a Glaucous Gull -like bill pattern, and 1 adult. Vadsoe: 27.3: 1 (2 caly), 1 (3 caly), 3 adults, one of which showed characteristics of Kumleini. 28.3: 1 adult 31.3: 2 (2 caly) LARUS HYPORBOREUS x ARGENTATUS. Two hybrid gulls were identified, both were of Glaucous x Herring type. Both were watched in reasonably good light with telescopes. Gull 1: Vadsoe Harbour, distance 100 meters. Dark markings visible in flight only. While swimming the general coloration similar to an adult Glaucous gull with a white head (summer plumage). In shape, the bird was very similar (or identical) to a Herring Gull, lacking the "mean look" of a Glaucous Gull. In this respect the bird looked somewhat like an Iceland Gull. The projection of the wing beyond the tail was about half of that in nearby Herring Gulls. The bill was similar in size and shape to a Herring Gull. The coloration of the wing appeared similar to an adult Glaucous or Iceland Gull. In flight, the following notes were made of the wing pattern: Coloration as in a Glaucous Gull, except that the white trailing edge of the wing narrower (2/3?) that of an normal adult Glaucous Gull. The base 2/3 of the visible part of the two outer primaries show dark grey or brownish coloration on the outer web, not appearing to extend to the inner web (underside of the wing lacked dark markings). Wingtips were white. GULL 2: Vestre Jakobselv village dump. Distance 200 meters. Dark marking visible when the bird was sitting. The general shape and appearence of the bird was not dissimilar to a normal Glaucous Gull (robust, thick necked, full breasted). The wing projected only slightly beyond the tail. The color of the back identical to that of a Herring Gull. In size the bird was slightly larger or equal to adjacent Greater Black-backed Gulls. Bill similar in length but thicker than Herring Gull's. Feet appeared yellowish with a greenish tinge. The wing tips of the bird in rest were largely white with a (2?) thin chevron shaped dark line(s) boardered thin grey lines on each side. In flight, the wings showed a broad white trailing edge. At least the outerweb of the two outer primaries was dark (except for the extreme tip), the third primary showed a narrow dark subterminal line. The fourth (and fifth?) primary showed a narrow (grey?) subterminal line. RISSA TRIDACTYLA (Black-legged Kittiwake) Despite the English name, several Kittiwakes we looked at Vadsoe Harbour from close range (distance 1-10 meters) appeared to have legs that were not black, but instead gave an impression of red coloration. This impression is also seen in some photographs. The coloration was seen both thru the water in swimming Kittiwakes as well as Kittiwakes that spread there webs just before landing to sea, or during air breaking. It is not clear whether the non-black coloration was restricted to the webs or whether it was shown by the whole foot. The impression of the reddish color may have been enhanced by background of the greenish ocean water. Attempts to assess the exact color failed, possibly because of individual variation. In most cases, the coloration appeared dark red, dark orange, or sometimes dark flesh colored. The kittiwakes had returned to Ekkeroeya (est. 5500 birds). North East of Krampenes we had a flock of 600 birds, and 1200 birds on the South-eastern corner of Stoerre Vadsoeya. All other birds were individuals flying back and forth along the fjord. ALCIDAE (Alcids) We didn't visit Hornoeya near Vardoe, thus our alcid species and individuals count low. Unidentified alcids are though to contain mostly Bruennich's Guillemots and a couple Razorbills (Alca torda). URIA AALGE (Guillemot) One winter plumaged individual identified at Stoerre Vadsoeya island. URIA LOMVIA (Bruennich's Guillemot) Single individuals along the coast. A large concentration of 137 (some of which were not properly identified due to distance) was noted on March 26 at Nesseby Chruch. Later visits to Nesseby Church yielded single individuals only. It appeared, that in flying birds, the white underwing coverts combined with a dark intrusion in the axilliaries extending close to the front of the wing sharply demacrated from the underside enables positive identification from a reasonable distance for both summer and winter plumaged birds. CEPPHUS GRYLLE (Black Guillemot) At the most a couple of birds together. It should be noted that a 2nd calendar year (juvenile of last year) and winter plumage birds are at this point grey/mottled making them look sometimes considerably smaller than nearby high contrast breeding plumaged birds. In flight, 2nd calendar year birds can cause further confusion because the white wing patch of an adult bird is not yet present this time of the year. COLUMBA LIVIA var domestica (Rock Dove) A few individuals at Vardoe by the gas station. PICOIDES TRIDACTYLA (Three-toed Woodpecker) One individual heard at Kevo (Finland). ANTHUS PETROSUS (Rock pipit) A single bird by Nesseby Chuch on the shore line. The bird was found fron the single beach, after watching it for a while the bird took off disappearing to eternity. The bird was a typical Rock pipit calling actively. PARUS MAJOR (Great Tit) Varangerbotn and Vestrejakobselv. PARUS MONTANUS (Willow Tit) 2 birds at Kevo. PARUS CINCTUS (Siberian Tit) 2 birds at a feeder in Makkenes, and three birds at Kevo (Finland). PERISOREUS INFAUSTUS (Siberian Jay) at least two birds calling at Kevo. PICA PICA (Magpie) scattered individuals in villages all along the coast. Numbers are possibly underestimations. CORVUS CORONE CORNIX (Hooded Crow) scattered individuals in villages all along the coast. Numbers are possibly underestimations. CORVUS CORAX (Raven) More rural that Hooded Crow, heavy concentrations around some village dumps: Vestre Jakobselv 60 birds and in Finland Utsjoki dump 150, Karigasniemi dump 170 birds. CORVUS MONEDULA (Jackdaw) the surprise bird of the trip. Two individuals were in a flock of Corvids at Vestre Jakobselv dump on March 31. We got close views (30m) and they appeared to be of the East European race. The birds were not present the next day. On a phone discussion with Heikki Karhu it turns out that a single Jackdaw was observed the next day, on April 1st, 200km South at Ivalo, which is quite a rare sighting up here. PASSER DOMESTICUS (House Sparrow) Small flocks at various towns/villages. A flock of 25 birds at Pulmak. CARDUELIS FLAMMEA (Redpoll) A couple of small flocks? Migrating? EMBERIZA CITRINELLA (Yellowhammer) A female seen at Vestre Jokobselv by a single member of the group. Not relocated. PLECTROPHENAX NIVALIS (Snow Bunting) Appears to have arrived during our stay. 27.3 32 birds near Andersby/Makkenes 28.3 7 flocks - Vestre Jakobselv 2; Kiby-Golnes 28,25,24, Ekkeroya 15,50, Skalleelv 62 30.3 3 parties - Vardo 11, Vadso island 5, near Skallelv 1 31.3 1 male Tana river road 1.4 2 pairs - Utsjoki-Karigasniemi PINICOLA ENUCLEATOR (Pine Grosbeak) a pair by Pahtavaara, between Karigasniemi and Utsjoki, flew over Teno/Tana river to Norway ============================================= Bird Species seen during the trip, but not in Lapland.
