“Meri Kyt\u00f6 is a lecturer in musicology (musiikkitieteen yliopistonlehtori<\/em>, in Finnish) at the University of Turku<\/a> and an associate professor (dosentti<\/em>, in Finnish) in auditory culture studies at the University of Eastern Finland. Her previous publications have tackled urban space, sonic domestication, articulations of acoustic privacy, soundscapes of political protest, busking, football fans and public libraries. Currently she\u2019s writing on sensory agency + labour and technology, background music during Christmas, listening to outer space, and she’s working on a manuscript on cochlear implants as soundscape arrangers.<\/p>\n

Currently she is working within the research projects Kuultava tulevaisuus<\/em> (“Audible future”, 2024-2026), and Sonic Mediations and Ecocritical Listening<\/em> <\/a>(SOMECO, 2024-2028), a longitudinal research project investigating auditory cultures experienced and articulated in six European villages.<\/p>\n

From 2019 to 2022 she was part of the Academy of Finland funded research project\u00a0Auditory Cultures, Mediated Sounds and Constructed Spaces<\/a>, responsible of Research Strand 3: Experienced and Reclaimed Acoustic Environments: to understand people\u2019s experiences, perceptions and actions in urban and commercial environments especially regarding ubiquitous music.”<\/p>\n

“I’m a soundscape enthusiast. I write about how people listen. I do field recordings and at times artwork from those recordings. My research interests are in auditory cultures, soundscape studies, science and technology studies, ethnomusicology, sensory ethnography, film sound and sound art.”<\/p>\n

Currently <\/span>I am a co-editor of Seismograf Peer<\/a>. I’m a member and vice-chair of the Evaluation panel no 22 (Literature, arts and architecture) at the <\/span>Publication Forum<\/a><\/span> (2018\u20132025), and in the editorial boards of <\/span>Elore<\/a><\/span>, <\/span>Sound Stage Screen <\/a><\/span>, <\/span>Norient Books<\/a><\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>and Vastapaino<\/a> publishing house.<\/p>\n

I am the chair of the Finnish musicological society<\/a> (2024\u2013<\/span>).<\/p>\n

I was the chair of <\/span>Finnish Society for Acoustic Ecology<\/a><\/i><\/span> (<\/i><\/span>2017\u20132022), also curating the society’s\u00a0<\/span>online soundscape archive<\/a><\/span> and have been serving on the board since 1999.<\/p>\n
