Jobs & PhD positions

The High Energy Astrophysics group at the University of Turku (Finland) is seeking applicants for the PhD program financed by CSC and CAS Scholarships (joint training PhD program by CSC or CAS). PhD candidates will undertake cutting-edge research under the supervision of word-leading astronomers. PhD projects cover a variety of theoretical and observational topics in areas related to the physics of compact objects such as neutron stars and black holes. Our group is a part of Tuorla Observatory, the largest Finnish astronomical research institute, hosting about 10 faculty, 10 post-doctoral researchers and 15 PhD students. Our PhD graduates continue their careers at top astronomy institutions around the world.

Prospective applicants with high academic standing and an interest in theoretical or observational research in any of the following areas are encouraged to apply:
– accretion onto magnetised neutron stars,
– X-ray polarimetry,
– neutron star equation of state,
– broad-band spectroscopy and timing of accreting compact objects.
A suitable background for this position is a Master of Science in astronomy or physics. A relevant degree project and experience in plasma physics, hydrodynamics, general relativity, radiation transport, computing, or data analysis would be advantageous.
The prospective candidate will get an access to the data from the currently operating NASA, ESA and CNSA X-ray missions (Chandra, XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, HXMT) as well as will participate in the preparations for the future missions (IXPE, eXTP, STROBE-X).
The availability of the position depends on the financial support from CSC or CAS.
