{"id":41,"date":"2019-03-29T15:54:06","date_gmt":"2019-03-29T15:54:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/users.utu.fi\/sertsy\/?page_id=41"},"modified":"2025-11-01T17:35:12","modified_gmt":"2025-11-01T17:35:12","slug":"home","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/users.utu.fi\/sertsy\/","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/users.utu.fi\/sertsy\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/866\/2019\/03\/Sergey.Tsygankov-1557-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"293\" height=\"311\" align=\"right\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"max-width: 600px\">Hi!<br \/>\nI am a member of the High Energy Astrophysics Group at the University of Turku.<br \/>\nMy research lies in the field of observational relativistic astrophysics, where we explore the most extreme processes in the Universe \u2014 those that produce high-energy photons in the X-ray and gamma-ray domains.<br \/>\nX-ray astronomy provides a unique window into physical conditions that cannot be reproduced in terrestrial laboratories: enormous temperatures, densities, and magnetic fields.<br \/>\nMy work focuses on the physics of X-ray pulsars and magnetars \u2014 the strongest magnets known in the Universe. The magnetic fields of these compact objects, reaching 10<sup>12<\/sup>\u201310<sup>16<\/sup> G, exceed anything achievable on Earth by ten orders of magnitude. I study how such extreme magnetic fields manifest observationally in the spectral, timing, and, most recently, polarimetric properties of accreting neutron stars.<\/p>\n<p><b>Research interests:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-left:5px\">\n<li>highly magnetised neutron stars (X-ray pulsars, magnetars)<\/li>\n<li>ultraluminous X-ray sources<\/li>\n<li>compact objects<\/li>\n<li>gamma-ray lines<\/li>\n<li>nuclear astrophysics<\/li>\n<li>Galactic diffuse emission<\/li>\n<li>supernova explosions and remnants<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hi!
