About me

Bio

I was born in Imatra in south-eastern Finland. I began my postgraduate studies in linguistics/philology at the University of Turku in 2012, defended my doctoral dissertation on 5 December 2019, and received my PhD degree on 31 December 2019.

Brief employment history

I am currently a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Helsinki, funded by the Academy of Finland. I began my doctoral studies in 2012, and since then I have also worked at the University of Turku as a university teacher, part-time instructor, project secretary, research assistant and doctoral candidate (funded by the University of Turku Graduate School and through several foundation grants), at Åbo Akademi University as a university teacher and part-time instructor, and at University College London as a visiting researcher funded by the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters. For an overview of my recently completed PhD project, check out my Research pages.

Education

Having moved to Turku at the age of 16, I attended the Turku Classical Upper Secondary School and completed my matriculation examination in 2005. I entered the University of Turku the same year, studying English philology, Latin philology, Greek philology, and general linguistics. I finished my BA in 2011 and my MA in 2012, and began my PhD studies immediately afterwards, adding philosophy into the mix.

Interests, hobbies and other useless information

Language and languages have been my passion ever since I was a child, so I do not mind spending most of my free time reading more about them. But since that is a bit geeky, I try to compensate by doing other stuff as well. I very much enjoy cooking and baking, and one of the best ways for me to relax is to spend a couple of hours chefing away in the kitchen. I also try to find as much time as possible to play the piano; ragtime is my favourite, but I am not too picky otherwise. I used to practise martial arts when I was younger, switching at one point to dancing (Morris and Irish), and turning to yoga and resistance training later on. I am also an avid gamer, enjoying retro video games in particular.
